West Coast rapper Too Short recently offered his take on the gay community and, specifically, his stance toward homosexual hip-hop artists being looked at differently.
In Short Dog’s perspective, no one should have to fall victim to anti-gay comments or treatment.
And what does Too $hort think of the hip hop community still not accepting gay rappers? “I just feel like at this point in time we should allow gay people to get married, we should not ridicule anyone who comes out, just go with it, it’s just a lifestyle,” Too $hort said. “Plus I feel like if somebody- all these upstanding people who are like ‘no its bad’ -if we went in their closets oh my god….” he exclaimed. Despite Short’s stance, fellow West Coast rap veteran Snoop Dogg recently said hip-hop would not openly welcome homosexual rappers.
Snoop said we shouldn’t hold our breath, explaining “Frank Ocean ain’t no rapper. He’s a singer. It’s acceptable in the singing world, but in the rap world I don’t know if it will ever be acceptable because rap is so masculine.” He continues, “It’s like a football team. You can’t be in a locker room full of motherf—-g tough-ass dudes, then all of a sudden say, ‘Hey, man, I like you.’ You know, that’s going to be tough.” But Snoop made it clear — it’s the nature of the biz, not him — adding, “I don’t have a problem with gay people. I got some gay homies.” (TMZ)
Last week, Grammy-winning singer T-Pain also spoke out in defense of same-sex relations.
After his assistant was bullied online, rapper T-Pain dissed the haters with a tweet reminding everyone that gay men don’t lust after every single guy in the world. “Attention homophobic idiots: if you’re not attractive to straight women, you’re probably not attractive to gay men. You can unclench now,” T-Pain posted on Twitter. “Just see a lot of ppl lookin at my assistant like ‘oh no better not go that way. That guy wants my butt.’ Don’t be an idiot. Ur still fugly.” (New Now Next)
Earlier this month, New York rapper A$AP Rocky clarified his stance toward gay rights.
“I’m not a gay rights activist,” A$AP clarified in an interview. “I guess because one day an interviewer asked me, ‘How do you feel about gay people,’ and I just honestly said, ‘I don’t care what they do.’ Everybody just took it [to another level]. It’s not that serious. I’m not no gay rights activist. They humans like everybody else. Why everybody keep talking about that? … I don’t want that to be a thing that everybody keeps asking me. I don’t care what straight people do, I don’t care what gay people do. I don’t care what nobody do. That’s they business. I just care about what I do. You know what I’m saying? … I’m not no gay rights activist. I don’t know what it takes to treat gay people right and what rights they don’t have. All I know is when you say certain things about gay people, people go crazy, like, act homophobic and that’s how it used to be and that’s how I used to be but I’m not like that anymore. If you’re gay, that’s your business. I really don’t care, at all. It’s like, I’m tired of them asking me about this gay [stuff]. It’s getting on my nerves, quite frankly.” (106 KMEL)
Last year, rap mogul Jay-Z showed his support for same-sex marriage.
Rapper Jay-Z on Monday threw his support behind President Barack Obama’s stance on legalizing same-sex marriage. The rapper, whose real name is Shawn Carter, said not allowing gay marriage was “holding the country back,” in an interview with CNN’s Poppy Harlow. “What people do in their own homes is their business and you can choose to love whoever you love. That’s their business. [It] is no different than discriminating against blacks. It’s discrimination plain and simple,” Jay-Z, a longtime supporter of Obama, added. (My Fox DC)
