Tarheel State rapper Big Pooh recently shared his thoughts on rappers spitting without a purpose and misrepresenting themselves on the mic.
The former Little Brother MC said that keeping it real on the mic is not as popular as it once was.
“There are alot of rappers doing it for the wrong reasons and alot of the times they don’t have as much as you think they have. It’s not just the big names [artists], either. One example I can give is when we were touring and went through the drive-through on the tour van. The guy in the window started rapping for us and he starts spitting this rap about how he has all these exotic cars, money, jewelry and all this stuff. I was like wow, he really just spit this type of rap to me as I’m watching him pass me food in a drive thru.” (SOHH)
Pooh went on to add that, in the grand scheme of things, he’d rather get the cash than the fame its tends to bring.
“I’m comfortable doing the type of music I’m doing. What alot of people don’t understand is that fame does not equate to money. Those are two different things. I’d rather just get my money and the people that know me, know me. The people that don’t, don’t.” (SOHH)
Hip-hop icon Method Man previously spoke on rap’s decline in quality material.
“The music was way more grounded than it is today,” Method Man told The Press Association. “Today, you don’t feel the movement. Back then, you felt the movement. I mean, the whole hip-hop movement. Like when Wu-Tang Clan came in, it was like regardless of where we went, people knew who we were. Or if we were in a new city, there was one person who knew who we was, and that would spread to ten more people, and so on and so forth, up until it was, ‘Oh, you ain’t up on that Wu-Tang stuff? Oh you ain’t down homie!’(SOHH)
In a recent interview, Billy Danze, one-half of the rap duo M.O.P. said that the lack of passion in today’s lyrics is hurting the game.
“With majority of today’s artists, there’s no effort [being demonstrated] in the music. If what’s coming out nowadays is your opinion of a good rapper then I’m almost ashamed to say that I’m a rapper. I don’t knock ’em — this is a business, so you gotta go out there and make music that gives you enough money to take care of your family, but don’t bring that over here. Don’t get on no stage with me walkin’ around.” (SOHH)
Earlier this year, producer 9th Wonder broke down the science of creating a project designed to stand the test of time.
“It has nothing to do with being from the North or the South. There is just a point where a person has to realize that in order to create a dope album, I have to study dope albums. Because dope albums are an event. Great albums aren’t just a collection of songs.”(SOHH)
