[With the attention on Top Dawg Entertainment this summer, The Roots affiliate Fong Sai U, who recently released his Ballads of a Massacre album, talks to SOHH about TDE’s rap game dominance.]

Shout-out to Top Dawg because he just sent out a tweet for me telling everybody to check out my album [“Ballads of a Massacre”]. That’s not why I’m messing with them, I’m messing with them because Kendrick [Lamar’s] ill. Jay Rock’s ill. ScHoolboy Q? Ill.

Jay Rock and the whole TDE still bang that boom bap. Kendrick’s last album? Come on man, it was so out there, it was so dope.

People couldn’t even grasp it. They couldn’t even hold onto it. It went over people’s heads.

There’s one song on the album where if you listen to his lyrics, he’s actually dissing these wack rappers. If you listen to what he’s saying about people ghostwriting and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, it’s funny, nobody caught none of that sh*t.

If you listen, what he’s saying is the climate of what’s going on right now is wack. And it is.

I’m not going to name any cats but there’s people out there with 21 and 41 different ghostwriters on a f*cking verse? Who are they trying to be, Michael Jackson?

Come on, man. It’s stupid. You got 21 dudes to produce one beat that don’t sound worth sh*t?

TDE is one of the crews I’ll always f*ck with. Wu is one of the crews I’ll always f*ck with personally and not personally. The Roots is always going to be my brothers because if it wasn’t for Black Thought, you wouldn’t know about Fong Sai U.

That’s always going to be the foundation. Even though we don’t talk like that, that’s a part of growing up, I’ll ride with them until the day I day.

When it comes to real hip-hop, The Roots and TDE.

I like trap music too, I respect them n*ggas’ hustle in Atlanta, the ones that are really doing it. So I respect Migos and I respect Solo Lucci and I respect the Peewee Longway and Bankroll Fresh and Jeezy.

That’s ‘their’ hip-hop element that they’re telling you about. They’re doing it for their element and their culture.

You got New York rappers trying to bounce on down South beats.
