[With everyone finally easing off Pharrell Williams’ “Happy” not winning at the Academy Awards, DJ Paul talks to SOHH readers about Three 6 Mafia being the only hip-hop group with an Oscar.]
It feels good to have an Oscar. It feels great.
It’s one of those accomplishments in life that you never are looking for. You don’t think too much about it. It’s like getting with a girl and you don’t expect her to do certain things but she does and you’re like ‘Oh my God! I didn’t know she was going to do that!’
It’s just like one of those deals. It feels good. It’s a h*ll of an accomplishment and it can really change your life. Sometimes it’s for the better and sometimes for the worst. It’s a h*ll of a thing.
I didn’t really know what it was when we won “Best Song” [for “It’s Hard out Here for a Pimp”]. I knew how that man looked, that gold man. I thought of it as a musician. As a musician, it’s nothing that you even plan on unless you’re a composer or something.
The idea of getting an Oscar? If you’re a rapper, you’re happy if you can even get a Grammy. That’s the thing. You’re mostly thinking about trying to get a Grammy and not an Oscar. It’s different these days but I remember I didn’t even think about it.
I had to Google what it was. I found out and then I was like, ‘This is cool as f*ck!’ I was like, ‘This is the big deal right here!’ We won. That’s it.
