Details of the reported new opportunity surfaced online on New Year’s Eve.

Rapper Jay-Z’s music is featured prominently in the trailer for ‘The Great Gatsby’ and now, according to a tweet unleashed into the Twitterverse yesterday (Dec. 30), the rapper has been tasked to compose original music for the score. A tweet issued by The Bullitts, the rap/electronic project of producer Jeymes Samuel, confirmed that the Hova is involved in the latest remake of the classic F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of money, excess and love. The tweet has since been deleted from The Bullitts’ feed, but it lives on, courtesy of ScreenCrush. The tweet read: “Jay-Z and myself have been working tirelessly on the score for the upcoming #CLASSIC The Great Gatsby! It is too DOPE for words! (Pop Crush)

Young Hov’s “Church in the Wild” track initially got featured on the flick’s trailer.

When the first trailer for director Baz Luhrmann’s ambitious adaptation of the classic novel The Great Gatsby debuted online, many were jarred by the juxtaposition of Jay-Z and Kanye West’s “Church in the Wild” against the film’s period setting. The decision to use that song in the trailer wasn’t a complete shock, as Luhrmann has shown a propensity for populating his period films with modern music. He had no problem mixing Shakespeare with Radiohead in Romeo + Juliet and 1900s France with Madonna in Moulin Rouge!. Now, though, it appears that Luhrmann isn’t just repurposing existing songs for The Great Gatsby, but is having Jay-Z himself provide an original score for the film. Hit the jump for more details. Additional music stars like Lady Gaga and Prince could end up on the project.

Back in October, separate reports indicated that Lady Gaga and Prince were contributing new music. No word yet if those pieces will make the final product or if this is strictly a Jay-Z project. The Great Gatsby — which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire — hits theaters May 10th, 2013. (Consequence of Sound)

Last summer, Jigga put his touch on the new NBA 2K13 video game score.

Rapper and Brooklyn Nets part-owner Jay-Z is set to executive produce NBA 2K13, the 13th installment in 2K Sport’s popular basketball game series. The news was revealed via his Life + Times website in a trailer featuring his song “Public Service Announcement” from “The Black Album.” The 24-second viral video is narrated by Michael Jordan and also showcases the cover baring Jay-Z’s name in the top right corner. NBA 2K13 is currently available for pre-order and is set to hit shelves on October 2. While it’s unclear the type of music Jay-Z has in mind for the soundtrack, in the past, both indie rock and hip-hop music have been featured. (Billboard)
