Hollywood icon Will Smith rewound time over the weekend by showing up at fellow movie star Gabrielle Union‘s 40th birthday party and performed his memorable “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” opening theme.
Smith also treated partygoers to a few more bars including a rendition of 1991’s “Summertime” anthem.
At Gabrielle Union’s 40th birthday party Oct. 27, Will Smith surprised party goers by busting out the theme song to his classic ’90s sitcom The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air — and 20 years later, he’s still got it. Talk about a great birthday present! Will, 44, and rapper Doug E. Fresh gave guests an impromptu performance, during which they performed the Fresh Prince theme song, and Will’s 1991 hit “Summertime.” (Hollywood Life)
Over the summer, Smith teamed up with DJ Jazzy Jeff to spice up “Summertime.”
We know him better as Will Smith than the Fresh Prince these days, but the “Men in Black 3″ star is getting back on the mic. The 43-year-old actor has recorded a remix of his 1991 still-fresh classic with DJ Jazzy Jeff, “Summertime” (which, let’s be honest, we still have in rotation, especially when the weather heats up). It’s “a groove slightly transformed, just a bit of a break from the norm,” Smith rhymes over the familiar beat. “Just a little somethin’ to break the monotony of all that hard-core dance that it’s gotten to be.” TMZ posted about a minute of the reworked hit, which will serve as an intro to “Summertime 3,” a forthcoming mixtape from DJ Jazzy Jeff and Mick Boogie. Last year, DJ Jazzy Jeff revealed Will’s request to reunite and make new music together.
“He came down like two weeks ago and was like, ‘Yo, I wanna get back into the studio, and we just knocked out some stuff,” Jeff told XXL. “I just think more than anything there is no set pattern, no set plan, but we just wanna go into the studio and see what we come out with. If I can get it back to the way we used to make music, you know, it used to be just me and him in the room. You don’t need no entourages and cameras and all of that and see what happens. He hasn’t decided exactly what he wants to do.” (XXL Mag)
Not every “Fresh Prince” co-star loved Will as on-screen “Aunt Vivian” actress Janet Hubert called out Smith in 2011.
15 years after the show went off the air … Janet Hubert tells TMZ, she’s still upset with the way she was fired from the show … and blames the whole thing on Smith himself. “There will never be a reunion … as I will never do anything with an a**hole like Will Smith,” Hubert said. She adds, “He is still an egomaniac and has not grown up. This constant reunion thing will never ever happen in my lifetime unless there is an apology, which he doesn’t know the word.” Hubert has said in the past she believes Smith is to blame for her departure in the middle of the show’s run — claiming he turned on her because she wouldn’t kiss his butt.
