Written By S. Samuel

[With National Smoke Day (4/20) right around the corner, SOHH's taking a twist from the overdone "marijuana legalization" discussion and asking your favorite hip-hop artists what they recommend these days: papers or blunts. The LOX's Styles P kicks off this hot debate!]

I do a little bit of both. I was just speaking on this earlier. My man Curren$y just put me onto Raw Cones. He’s got me on the raw paper but before him, a couple of my homies from the Islands and all of that, they like to blow that bamboo.

They do the bamboo with the Fronto leaf in int. But I still hit the Dutches too. The real thing for me is I’ve fallen back from the Dutchess. It kind of f*cks with me when I’m in the booth.

Like, it’s hard to smoke a lot of Dutchess and then go into the booth with a clear throat. And I’ve been smoking a long time. So you try to stay healthy and so I’m kind of on both right now. To be honest with you, I only really smoke a Dutchess when I’m in the studio. When I’m at home, I just smoke papers.

It’s about the health. With me, I’m an original Dutchess Master head so these new Dutchess Masters that they’ve got out now aren’t the Original Dutchess Masters and it tastes too thick and you can taste too much tobacco. I don’t like that.

I like to taste what I’m smoking.

Styles P, a member of rap groups The LOX and D-Block, he is also a part of the Ruff Ryders hip-hop group along with DMX, Eve and Drag-On. He grew up on the streets of Yonkers, NY rapping alongside Jadakiss (Jayson Phillips) and Sheek Louch (Shawn Jacobs). In their late teens the trio met Mary J. Blige who was so impressed with their tough street east coast lyrics, she gave them a big break by putting their demo in the hands of Sean “Diddy” Combs. Diddy immediately hired the trio to write for Bad Boy Records. With the label, The LOX quickly started collaborating on hits with Diddy, the Notorious B.I.G., Mary J. Blige, and Mariah Carey which gave them instant notoriety and status within the hip-hop and mainstream charts.
