SOHH Exclusive: Rick Ross Heats NYC W/ “Deeper Than Rap” Preview, “This Is History” [Video]

Rick Ross made a stop in New York City last night (March 17) previewing his upcoming album Deeper Than Rap and assuring listeners that his new music is “history for the boss.”

The Miami rapper weighed in on his pre-release thoughts and the importance of the forthcoming project.

“First and foremost I wanna thank everybody out and having me,” Ross told the crowd. “I gotta salute the number one label in the game Def Jam Records…I wanna thank retail, I wanna thank radio, all aspects of the game when it comes down to the music ’cause you need all your counterparts to go with where we about to go with this one…The situation is magnificent and it’s only gonna get better. I want everybody to know that this is history. History for the boss. History for everybody that’s a part of this LP.” (SOHH On The Scene Blog)

Despite an album packed with diverse features and production, Ross limited the exclusive listening session to nine tracks from his album.

Deeper Than Rap listening session line-up: Cold Blood, Ususual Suspect featuring Nas, Maybach Music Pt. 2 featuring Kanye West & Lil Wayne, All I Really Want featuring The-Dream, Gunplay featuring Gunplay, Cigar Music featuring Masspike Miles, Top of the World featuring Avery Storm, Mafia Music and Magnificent featuring John Legend. Ross eventually ended the session thanking the industry crowd for attending.

“Hopefully y’all enjoyed it,” Ross told the clapping crowd. “Of course, that was a few cuts off of Deeper Than Rap, I wouldn’t be the boss if I saved a treat or two for the album. But that’s the direction we goin’, I feel like I’m making the best music I’ve ever made in my career. I’m stepping out on a limb making more musical, it’s more music, ya understand? And that’s what it is at the end of the day…Maybach Music Group, I am the CEO. It’s Ricky.” (SOHH On The Scene Blog)

While resisting any temptation to speak on 50 Cent during the preview, Ross recently said his battle with the G-Unit leader has helped fans notice his lyricism.

“My freestyles as you could hear them, ‘Kiss My Pinky Ring,’ I do them in 20 minutes and put them out there,” he said in an interview. “Those crumble empires. People listening to how potent the music is. That’s all this really is for me. I’m not really excited yet. All this is a platform for me to show people how talented I am. How much better of a lyricist I am.” (MTV)

Deeper Than Rap is scheduled to hit stores Tuesday, April 21 via Def Jam/Maybach Music Group.
