Although X’s “f*ck Jay-Z” remarks took hip-hop by surprise, Sheek said his former labelmate was always known for going at artists during their early days in Yonkers, New York.

“I gotta find out what that was about,” Sheek told DJ Vlad when asked his opinion about X’s diss. “I’m guessing because [Jay-Z] was the president at Def Jam at the time, when X wanted to put his album out — I was guessing Hov was over here, the president, and I heard one time X delivered the project and [Jay] said, ‘nah, he gotta come harder’ or something like that. I heard rumors and sh*t like that…[Out in Yonkers,] that’s nothing new. X was getting at motherf*ckers and coming at you, man. All that spellbound sh*t back then, that was real sh*t.” (Vlad TV)

According to X’s manager Nakia Walker, the rapper was planning to apologize to Jay-Z prior to being arrested a few weeks ago.

Walker revealed that X had planned to issue a video apology to former collaborator Jay-Z after video of the Dog freestyling the lyric “F*ck Jay-Z” surfaced online earlier this week. “Jay called Swizz [Beatz] and Swizz called us and we’ve been on the phone, back and forth over the last couple of days,” she said. “He was just freestyling, he doesn’t feel that way at all; not at all.” (XXL Mag)

Rapping at a Scottsdale concert, X publicly called out Young Hov.

“Y-O, Y-O in this b*tch, n*gga,” X told a crowd of Arizona fans. “New York to AZ, New York to AZ, n*ggas must be crazy, f*ck Jay-Z! Ya heard? Ya heard? … What do y’all think is the state of the rap industry right now? I mean, you know, I’m an artist so I kind of have bias views but I think most these n*ggas suck! I think they not only suck, but they suck d*ck! I mean, correct me if I’m wrong, we’re real people. Most of us got jobs — but you got these n*ggas talking about Bentleys, mansions and pool parties, we don’t rock that sh*t son! So my take on it is, you got Patron in your cup? Good for you! You got a b*tch that wanna f*ck? Good for you! You sittin’ on 24’s? Good for you! You got Lamborghini doors? Good for you! Because at the end of the day? I ain’t got that sh*t…” (Goon Boss TV)

Last year, X also name checked Jay and said his time as Def Jam president around the mid-2000’s forced him to leave the label.

“I f*cks with him and had respect for him — until he became the president of Def Jam and I ain’t gonna say too much more about it, but you know what it is. There’s a difference between doing wrong and being wrong. There’s a difference between doing wrong and ‘being’ wrong, at one point you were ‘being’ wrong. N*ggas can’t do it like we could, n*ggas couldn’t do it like we could. N*ggas weren’t able to — we’re artists. Jay is a talented motherf*cker. Don’t misunderstand me. He is talented but he has no heart behind it. There’s no soul behind it. It’s motivated by money…But I still maintain the respect, because our birthday is in the same month and you know, we have history. But I lost it when he became president of Def Jam, that’s why I left Def Jam…When you became the president, you hit me ‘yo dog, the inmates is running the building!!!’ You know what that mean, your mans is in charge…That’s what it is, we good,’ ’cause we had history. And then you go do that. You come down, listen to my sh*t — we ready. Then you go on vacation. N*ggas take a picture of you with chancletas on. That’s what you leave the hood for, son? That’s why you walk out on your man for, son? Flip-flops? Serious? You serious? Real talk son, I respected you. I’m in my feelings about that. I’m hurt. I ain’t ever talk about that.” (Hip Hop Stan)
