In Schoolboy’s opinion, his Black Hippy crew members have not yet reached the same level of stardom or success as Kendrick has.

“I always say that too, Kendrick is like, way ahead of us. He’s a platinum artist. I haven’t dropped my album yet, you know what I’m saying? Rock’s working on his major label album, Ab-Soul‘s still working on his major label album — so honestly, at the same time, at the end of the day, I mean, he is f*cking Kendrick Lamar. You’re signed to the biggest artist right now. Hopefully I can do that too. It’s all about proving yourself at the end of the day. At the same time, I’m not signed to Kendrick and Black Hippy is us four and not Kendrick Lamar with Black Hippy. It’s four people, not three.” (MTV)

Jay also downplayed the controversy and said the fans know who all are in Black Hippy no matter how they are portrayed in the media.

“It’s Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q, Ab-Soul and Jay Rock, or you can say formerly known as Black Hippy. But you know, I don’t ever take that offensive. Me, personally, because at the end of the day, whether it’s Kendrick’s name or if it were Schoolboy Q and Black Hippy or Ab-Soul and Black Hippy’s, it’s us, you feel me? Because we’re in this together. Stuff like that don’t bother me. People know what it is.” (MTV)

After the new XXL cover surfaced last month, group member Ab-Soul notably took offense.

“If y’all keep printing “Kendrick Lamar & Black Hippy” I will remove myself from the group. Thanks.,” Ab tweeted October 16. (Ab-Soul’s Twitter)

According to reports, Black Hippy officially formed four years ago.

Black Hippy is an American hip hop group from South Central, Los Angeles, California, formed in 2009, composed of West Coast rappers Ab-Soul, Jay Rock, Kendrick Lamar, and Schoolboy Q. Black Hippy is currently signed to Top Dawg Entertainment and Interscope Records as solo artists and as a group. (Rap Genius)
