Southern rapper Rick Ross recently talked about snagging singer Chrisette Michele and Drake to spot him guest features on their new collaboration track, “Aston Martin Music.”
While Michele’s assistance came from already having worked with Ross in the past, the rapper said Drake was inspired by his J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League-produced instrumental.
“She loved the beat. She wrote her lyrics,” Ross said of Michele’s session for “Aston Martin.” “It took her 10, 15 minutes to cut her vocals. I’m sitting there like, ‘Wow. All right, all right.’ At that point, I didn’t know who was gonna sing the second half…I sent [the beat] to the homie. He laced me. Right then, he was ready to jump on his verse. Right then, he was ready to cock and load. I was like, ‘I know you finishing your joint. Just give me that half a chorus, and I’mma make it do what it do. He loved the record. I got it back. He laced it at the point. When he heard [the finished version], it was magic. He was like, ‘I’m finnin’ to go in the studio, Ross. I’mma need to get on that.'” (MTV)
Being tagged for more rap features as of late, Drake recently spoke on his various co-signs.
“For anybody that doesn’t believe in me, your favorite rappers do,” he added. “They call me for hooks, features and all that. Ross, Jeezy, the hardest dudes–B.G. C-Murder calls me from jail. Turk calls me from jail to tell me I’m doing great. For the people that don’t believe, the people that you do believe in got love for me. That’s all that matters.” (XXL Mag)
Def Jam Senior Marketing VP Chris Atlas discussed Ross’ Teflon Don album promotion in an interview last week.
“We took the fact that he had so many people working with him on the record and captured it on film and video, which we are releasing around the Web,” Atlas says. “Rick has been working nonstop since the last record feeding stuff to his lifestyle and street base. He’s put out three or four mixtapes, and there is constant messaging to his core.” Atlas says Ross is on a 10-city promotional tour and making club and radio station appearances. Atlas adds that Ross is starting to work with brands, due in part to his recent co-management deal with Sean “Diddy” Combs. “We’re opening him up to working with brands,” Atlas says. “He did some smaller stuff before, and he’s been doing some things with Ciroc [a vodka brand Combs endorses]. But now he’s starting to attract attention from some bigger names. For instance, he’s using the nickname ‘Ricky Rozay,’ so some champagne brands are expressing a desire to do something.” (Billboard)
Initially slated for a June release, Ross recently talked about his new album getting released today.
“It was a real good move,” Ross said about the delay. “I felt like the June 29th was a little too premature, that was the date my homie Diddy was coming out on anyway. And you know that’s the homie, so I felt like coming in the early July, middle July was best for me from day one. But it’s always good anyway man as long as you’re setting up all your pieces up in the right place. You’re setting your radio up, you’re setting your marketing up, the rest of that sh*t come in place when you got hits.” (Rap Radar)
