Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon is putting his stamp of approval on hip-hop newcomer Napoleon Da Legend by giving SOHH the scoop on hopping on the rapper’s new “Oxygen” single, officially premiering later this week.
Admitting how cautious he is when it comes to choosing to work with new acts, the “Chef” said the underground emcee is cooking up something special on wax.
“When I first heard the beat by Napoleon Da Legend, I knew it was gonna be special, but when I heard his vocals and the beat combined, it reminded me of myself being a hungry cat coming up, ’bout to take the game by storm,” Rae told SOHH in a statement referring to the “Oxygen” single. “I’m very conscious about who I record with far as new artists is concerned, but when I wrote my verse I followed his lead because it was so powerful. It was that great that I [was] contemplating about buying the record from him. But this will be a cat y’all will be hearing from in the near future I’m co-signing that!” (SOHH)
Napoleon recently opened up about his style of music and what fans can expect to hear from him.
“I do what comes natural to me and what’s true to me, you know. I don’t force it. I’m always looking to have the undeniable freshness in my sound for real. I try not to limit myself to one thing you know. As long as I stay Napoleon Da Legend on the track, I can flip to anything I please. Everything is a challenge you know, even waking up out of bed can be a challenge some days lol. I just always try to put my best foot forward and let that feeling take over me. As far a reggae and dancehall, I have so much love and respect for those vibes, and those artists. I do Reality Rap in the form of hip-hop. So, as long as the instrumental has rhythm and a good vibe, I’m a do my thing on it. So when I hop on a reggae influenced beat or what not, I’m bringing that hip-hop to it, that NDL sh*t.” (Da Street Buzz)
The record will mark Rae’s latest release since dropping his new Unexpected Victory mixtape last week.
Though the disc was initially slated to hit the e-streets on Christmas Day, the Wu-Tang clansman delivered with his own collection of special guests. Unexpected Victory features Mobb Deep, L.E.P. Bogus Boys, Styles P, and Busta Rhymes assisting with the rhymes, while The Olympicks, 9th Wonder and Statik Selektah lead the roster of producers. (RapFix)
The Wu member recently hinted at plans to do something special for his Clan’s 20th anniversary.
Next year also marks the 20th anniversary of the formation of the Wu-Tang Clan, the legendary hip-hop group that first introduced the world to Raekwon, the rapper says that the collective has big plans. “We’ve been sitting around talking,” he says. “We got something lined up. I can’t speak on it yet because it’s still confidential until it’s actually solidified.” (Billboard)
