Wu-Tang Clan’s Raekwon recently shared his insight on 16 year-old pop sensation Justin Bieber and how he knew the singer was a solid artist at first glance.
Reflecting on his remix of Bieber’s “Runaway Love,” the Chef said music heads should resist pre-judging artists outside of the urban genre.
“At the end of the day, it’s all about making great music. If it sounds great, you can’t front on it. If Lady Gaga and Akon get together and make a great record, you can’t front on it. Regardless of her genre of music, if it’s a nice song and it captures the audience of both worlds – which everybody is working for – [you can’t front on it]. Once I made that record with Justin Bieber, it was a lot of street cats was coming at me like, ‘Yo, I like shorty…Shorty’s voice is nice.’ But I always knew he was nice from when I seen him on TV singing [during] one of [the] Michael Jackson tributes when Mike had passed away. So I already knew that shorty was gonna come to the table and bring something real creative. And to be able to get on one of his remixes and do what we did, it fit perfect. We gave him a platform, as well as me getting a platform from him with the new generation.” (Hip Hop DX)
Prior to the remix being released last summer, Rae discussed his ability to hold his own on pop-sounding records.
“It’s definitely gonna happen,” Rae said in an interview. “When you got these kinda talents merging together to do something exciting, I think it’s something that’s gonna make the fans check it out. I’m big fans of both of these guys. I think, at the end of the day, shorty is a sensation. And [for him] to acknowledge me it makes me feel good that the young generation is checkin’ me out like that. And at the same time it gives me a position to play a bigbrother in the game. He wants my assistance or whatever he can get it. I respect him, I like his style…Yeezy called me and we gon’ make it pop. At the end of the day we’re all doing our thing in the game and for them to even just have a conversation and just put my name in it it feels good. It feels good to respect what I do and I respect what they do. And we gon’ make a hit. Justin got his own fan base and me and Yeezy got our own fan base and we gon’ make it happen. We gon’ make a good record.” (XXL Mag)
Last week, Grammy-winning producer/rapper Kanye West revealed an interest to collaborate on Bieber’s upcoming sophomore album.
Along with having a taste for the finer things in life, Kanye West apparently has contracted Bieber Fever. While the illness initially presented itself as a remix back in August, Justin Bieber’s manager Scooter Braun confirmed during a recent audiochat that the Louis Vuitton Don now wants to produce and collaborate on even more tracks with the wunderkind from Toronto. Braun did not share many specifics, but said that “[Bieber] and Kanye had a call… about a song they’re trying to work on together. Kanye wants to produce a bunch of new songs for his new album.” (Consequence of Sound)
G-Unit’s Lloyd Banks recently said he would hop on a track with Bieber.
“I would definitely do a record with Justin Bieber. I think early on in my career things were a little different. Now, the fact of the matter is the youth determine which way music is going to go,” explains Banks. “When you become influential enough to control one market, I think it’s time to cross-market.” (VIBE)
