The Clipse's Pusha T recently revealed some dicey words shot his way courtesy of Cash Money co-founder Birdman a.k.a. Baby sparked the "New God Flow" Cruel Summer anthem.
According to Pusha, the track is actually a response to a Birdman interview.
“New God Flow” was about, in my view, something I read in a Birdman interview that I didn’t like. He said something like “G.O.O.D. Music isn’t nothing” and it had nothing to do with Wayne or Drake per se. That was Birdman saying whatever he wanted to say and that was the basis of where all of my lines came from. Everybody else was on their love of Hip-Hop s**t.” (Hip Hop Wired)
Earlier this month, Wu-Tang Clan’s RZA acknowledged Yeezy’s bars on “New God Flow.”
On top of his message, RZA also was impressed with ‘Ye’s actual raps on the song as well. He even likened him to Wu-Tang Clan member and “New God Flow” collaborator Ghostface Killah. “Kanye’s a dope lyricist, but what he did on this particular song, it ain’t 16 bars, he’s going like how Ghostface goes,” RZA said. “Like, 40 bars, just goin’. He’s goin and he’s killin’ it, yo!” (MTV)
A few days prior, Pusha T admitted getting blown away by Ghostface’s rhymes on the smash hit.
“I heard the album on August 28th. I was just as shocked as you were,” Pusha T tells VIBE about the surprise Ghostface verse featured on “New God Flow.” “Everybody was brought in the studio and told to sit down, and [Kanye] played it. And they all just watching me. He’s telling me ‘Listen to the new mix! Whatcha think about the new mix of it?’ Man, when Ghost came on I fainted. He killed it.” The track contains a classic sample from Ghostface’s “Mighty Healthy” record, which was released on his sophomore album, Supreme Clientele. To this day, Pusha says these vets are still some of the best in the business. “We said that Ghost and Raekwon have the most timeless flows in hip-hop,” Pusha T continues. “It’s beautiful.” (VIBE)
Over the summer, Pusha explained his reason for not answering Birdman protégé Lil Wayne‘s “Goulish” diss record.
“I was surprised actually at the whole — anybody, but Wayne specifically, answering ‘Exodus.’ I’ve never seen one record that didn’t say any names cause so much of a firestorm,” Pusha told radio host Funkmaster Flex. “[‘Goulish?’] It was horrible. It was trash. It wasn’t good — I didn’t like [the production] either. Let me say this. I didn’t like it for that type of record. I didn’t feel like, in all honesty, I haven’t said anything about it because I didn’t think it was good enough to respond to.” (Hot 97)
