Mobb Deep’s Prodigy recently discussed his relationship with the self-proclaimed “King of the South” T.I. and how they managed to build a connection despite simultaneously being behind bars.
According to Capital P, they took their jail bond to the studio upon his release from a three-year jail bid in March 2011.
“When we were locked up, we were in contact with each other, so when we both came home, we had reached out and was like, ‘Let’s get this work done,'” P started explaining about the T.I. collaboration, ‘What’s Happening,’ on which the King is featured on and produced. “I think I told him, ‘Give me your e-mail, I’m going to send you some joints’ and he was like, ‘Yo, check this out, I make beats.’ He said, ‘You might want to listen to some of my joints, you might like something,'” P added. “I was like, ‘Hell yeah, send that.’ So, the first joint he sent over was just incredible. He had put a chorus on it already and the beat was crazy. It don’t even sound like a South beat or New York beat. You can’t pinpoint where this beat came from. It was just good music, so I was like, ‘Yeah, this is dope right here.'” (XXL Mag)
In May, the Mobb Deep member discussed collaborating with Tip and Pittsburgh rapper Wiz Khalifa.
“I wanted to use people that were kinda hard to get and also you wouldn’t think that I would collab with them,” Prodigy told “RapFix Live” host Sway Calloway on Wednesday’s show. “You wouldn’t think that Pee would have a song with them right now.” Prodigy didn’t yet have a title for the track with T.I. because the pair had just finished recording it Tuesday night, but he was able to dish a bit on the song with the Taylor Gang captain: “The Wiz record is called ‘Co-Pilot.’ That one is dope,” he bragged with a sheepish grin. Fans will have to hold out until July 3 to hear H.N.I.C. 3 in full, but Pee promises it will be well worth the wait. It’s been four years since he released H.N.I.C. Pt. 2, and while the original H.N.I.C. is well-regarded in hip-hop circles, Prodigy admits to rushing production on the second installment. “I had a limited amount of space to do it before I had to turn myself in,” he said of his three-year jail stint for gun possession. Just this week, he hinted at possibly doing a collaborative project alongside Dipset’s Jim Jones.
“To tell you the truth, I’ll let something out of the bag. Me and Jim Jones was talking about doing an album together, because everybody was like, ‘Y’all n*ggas like twins.’ Every time we go out and standing next to each other, people say that about us,” he said. “We was just talking. I had done that song on his [Capo] album when I came home [last year]. We was talking and I was like, ‘Yo, let’s do an album together.’ He was like, ‘Let’s do a few mixtape joints and see how people are feeling it out and let’s try it.’ That’s something that’ll probably be happening.” (VIBE)
Last year, Jones talked to SOHH about hooking up with Prodigy in the studio.
“I got Prodigy on my new Capo album,” Jones told SOHH. “Me and P have already been in the studio. He came in the studio and didn’t leave until 7:30 AM [yesterday] morning. He was doing his thing. He looks good. Prodigy looks like he got his weight up, he’s in shape and it looks like he’s got his mind right. He looks like he’s been reading his books in there, the raps are on point, the flow is good, shouts to P. RSV-P and all that. Prodigy, P, you heard me?” (SOHH)
