The new animated movie Despicable Me, which features comedian Steve Carell and scoring by Pharrell Williams, dominated the weekend box office with over $60 million in sales.
The film easily topped its competition which included the new Predators movie.

The new movie opens to both children and adults.
Despicable Me is as sunny as it’s minions are bright yellow. There are plenty of jokes for the adults, a cleverly placed “Formerly Lehman Brothers” sign will go over the kids’ heads, but there are also kid-friendly characters and gags that all ages will embrace and enjoy. Young Elsie Fisher steals the show with some spot-on improvised lines, like when she sees the stuffed unicorn of her dreams and squeals, “It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die!” But what will keep you bouncing along throughout the movie and for hours after is the music. Grammy Award-winning artist (and my fellow Virginia Beach native) Pharrell Williams brings the whole movie together with a number of Gru-vy original songs and a score he completed with Heitor Pereira. Singer, songwriter, producer Pharrell Williams will write original music for Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s upcoming 3D CGI feature “Despicable Me” starring Steve Carrell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Danny McBridge, Julie Andrews and more. In addition to the film’s title track, which debuted with the feature’s teaser trailer, Williams has already begun to write the film’s orchestral score as well. It marks the first time the artist will compose music for a film. “I love cartoons and animation, and I’ve never seen such incredible 3D CGI,” Williams said in a statement. “To score ‘Despicable Me’ along with Hans and Heitor and write original songs for the film is a dream come true.” (Eur Web News)
Recently, Pharrell said working on Despicable Me assisted him with the upcoming N.E.R.D. album, Nothing.
“Working on the [Despicable Me animated movie] score actually helped me for my new N.E.R.D. album, Nothing. It comes out September 7th. That really prompted me because of the learning experience I got working at Hans Zimmer’s compound. It was pretty amazing! There were so many sounds and so many different directions.
