Grammy-winning producer Pharrell Williams has shocked the Internet this week after revealing there were initial plans for his “Happy” smash to go to another rapper.
Appearing on the “Howard Stern Show” this week, Williams admitted Goodie Mob’s CeeLo Green had “Happy” written all over him.
“(Green) did do it,” Williams told Stern after being asked if he’d considered passing the song along to another singer. That wouldn’t have been out of line for Williams: Prior to “Happy,” he had specialized in songwriting and producing for other hitmakers. “But … how do I say this diplomatically?” continued Williams. “The powers that be, at the time, did not see it fit for him…. He wanted to do it. But I think some folks on his team just felt that the priority should have been on (his) album at the time (2012’s “CeeLo’s Magic Moment”), so they elected not to do that song.” (Today)
Earlier this year, NBA champion LeBron James bigged up P’s G I R L album and even named “Happy” his family’s favorite tune.
“S/O to my homie @pharrell on his latest LP “Girl”!! Keep killing all them charts fam. Num.1 everywhere and ofcourse “Happy” is my kids and I favorite song in a long time! Well it’s everyone’s favorite, just makes u feel good about yourself! #SkateBoardP #Grammys #Oscars #StriveForGreatness,” James wrote March 3. (LeBron James’ Instagram)
Williams brought some life to the Academy Awards with a “Happy” performance this year.
Pharrell Williams shook his groove thing at the Academy Awards, along with a few famous friends. The singer took the Oscars stage for a lively performance of his Oscar-nominated song “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2.” Williams, wearing his signature large hat, wasn’t satisfied with the phalanx of backup dancers he had on stage — so he worked his way into the audience for some star-powered reinforcements. After coming up short at the Academy Awards, the producer looked at what positives came from his Oscar nod.
“I feel OK. That experience was incredible. … The album is No. 1 at the moment in about 60 countries on iTunes, like what. I’m like, thank you, guys. I attribute all these great breaks and opportunities that the universe has given me.” (Hot 97)
