George Steinbrenner reportedly passed away today from a massive heart attack.
George Steinbrenner, a bombastic shipping magnate whose 1970s purchase of the New York Yankees helped turn what had become a moribund franchise into once again the most powerful brand name in American sports, died Tuesday morning in a Florida hospital. He had turned 80 on July 4. In a statement Tuesday, the Steinbrenner family said, “It is with profound sadness that the family of George M. Steinbrenner III announces his passing.
