Young Money’s Nicki Minaj discusses her recent fame with a platinum-selling debut album and mainstream exposure in the new issue of Elle magazine.
Within the feature, Minaj explains how achieving such a high profile has made her more cautious with decisions she makes.
“To know that I’m ‘making waves,’ it feels good but it gives me a little more pressure. Because before, I would do things without thinking,” she said. “I would do an interview without thinking or wear something without thinking, but it makes me put a lot more thought because now, I know people are going to pick it apart. Whether they love or hate it, people are going to pick it apart…It comes with the territory. You want to be one of those females in the business that people want to see what you’re going to wear and what you’re going to do and what you’re going to say…I just take the good with the bad. I cannot complain. I’ve been living my dream, and I wouldn’t trade it for the world.” (Elle)
Last month, Young Money leader Lil Wayne said Minaj’s show-and-prove mentality helped her succeed.
“I can’t front, I just thought she was going to be the new female MC that none of these other female MCs can touch,” Wayne said about Nicki. “But now, she’s blossomed into a megastar with this new attitude and this style. Now when I talk to her, I just tell her, ‘Do what you do, baby.’ I used to be able to go into the studio and say, ‘Nah, don’t say that, don’t say that.’ You know, ‘That was better.’ Now, do what you do, baby. I don’t have a clue about what you’re doing right now, but it’s working, do it.” (MTV)
In late December, Minaj credited model Amber Rose for hooking her up with Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West, which resulted in multiple collaborations.
“Well I was great friends with Amber Rose when they were dating and she had recommended me to him for his album and finally I guess he relented [laughs],” Minaj said of meeting West. “One day I got a call from her and she said Kanye wanted me to come down to Hawaii and record for the album. He told me I could pick what I wanted to be on. I heard the beat for ‘Monster.’ I fell in love with it and that’s how the ‘Monster’ verse happened…When it came to me putting my album out, I was like ‘I can’t have an album without Kanye. He has to be a part of it.’ He’s become my mentor, he gives me advice, he hits me, takes random pictures off-line and says ‘Oh this is a good picture of you.’ He’s really into fashion so he’s a good person to have a well-rounded conversation with.” (RWD Mag)
As of this week, Minaj’s debut album has sold over 1.2 million copies.
