Nicki Minaj Reveals Biggest Scare, “[I Thought] This Is Going To Ruin My Career”

Young Money rapper Nicki Minaj has divulged how one of her biggest fears came to life this year, which led her to believe that her career was finished.

According to Minaj, the leak of her record-breaking hit “Your Love” struck fear inside her.

“I didn’t like the song, and I didn’t put it out,” she said. “Someone stole it out of the studio and put it on the Internet, and I cried because I was mortified. I was humiliated and remember telling Drake, ‘This is going to ruin my career.'” (Billboard)

Since its unauthorized release this summer, the soong has gone on to become one of hip-hop’s most historic tracks of the past few years.

‘Your Love’ is the first single by a female rap artist to top the Rap Songs chart in seven years, with Lil’ Kim‘s ‘Magic Stick’ featuring 50 Cent serving as the last track to hold the same position back in June 2003 for five consecutive weeks. And while Kim had some male assistance, Missy Elliott is the last female artist to have a solo track top the chart with ‘Work It’ in November ’02. (The Boom Box)

After noting its overwhelming success, Minaj eventually released a music video to accompany the song.

Although she battled critics earlier this year, Minaj recently discussed the amount of female support she has received leading up to next week’s release of her debut, Pink Friday.

“I think there are many female rappers that I get along with,” Minaj said in an interview with media personality Perez Hilton. “There have been so many female rappers that have congratulated me and given me genuine love. From Trina, who’s my darling, to Missy Elliott, to Queen Latifah to Foxy Brown to Remy Ma, I mean, it goes on and on. That’s what people don’t understand. They think I’m the hated female rapper but it’s like a lot of the girls have shown me love and come behind the scenes. Not even on the camera, just behind the scenes and have said, ‘Congrats and keep up the good work.'” (Perez TV)
