Nicki acknowledged Wayne believing in herself and Young Money stud Drake.

“Now we can have conversations and enjoy each other,” she says. “But I don’t think I’ll ever feel like he’s my peer because of how much he’s done for me. I’ll always think of him like…” she pauses, grins and breathlessly bats her painted eyelashes like a starstruck teen. “Like the king.” Years earlier, he’d noticed her on the budget hip-hop documentary series The Come Up DVD, sought her out and mentored her. “I give Wayne credit because he saw me and pretty much picked me out of a lineup, and he knew enough to run with Drake as well,” she continues. “From early on, he was so generous with helping younger artists, and it paid off well for him.” (The FADER)

In his new XXL cover feature, Lil Wayne explained why he viewed Drake as much more than your average rapper.

“Call me old-fashioned and country, but with Drake, that was the first time I’d seen someone that knew how to sing and rap. That’s all it was. I didn’t know nobody who knew how to do that. You had those old school singing n*ggas, where people would do a little eight-bar verse on their songs. But [Drake] was spitting and singing and killing that too. It took a while though. It wasn’t until I heard him spitting on one of my beats when I was like, ‘This fool’s retarded.’ When I hear something that I know I can’t do better? That’s when I’m like, ‘They need to be on the team.'” (XXL Magazine)

Weezy F. Baby placed special emphasis on Minaj being able to hang with any male emcee.

“I wanted a female. Every team needs a female to rep your gang. She was annihilating n*ggas. I mean males. I was like, ‘I have to beef my sh*t up on that muthaf*cka.’ She just knocked it out the park from day one. She’s just Nicki. I don’t know whose idea it was, but it was a good idea.” (XXL Magazine)

Recently, mega producer Timbaland said Drake, Rick Ross, Kendrick Lamar and Nicki Minaj were hip-hop’s biggest stars.

“The younger generation, we haven’t seen a star being born yet. We’ve seen Drake. Drake might have been the last star that we’ve seen, but we haven’t seen a superstar yet, like super, super-star. Drake was the last of them that I thought that we might have seen. Drake and [Rick] Ross. I would say Kendrick [Lamar] too. Those might be the last three. [Nicki Minaj?] That might be the only one. But we haven’t seen nobody else.” (Rolling Stone)
