Young Money’s Nicki Minaj has delved into her love for longstanding reality show “American Idol” and why she turned down past opportunities to join its competitors.
According to Nicki, she has rocked with “American Idol” dating back to the pre-fame days of former winner-turned-music star Jordin Sparks.
“I remember watching ‘American Idol’ in the first season and feeling inspired,” Minaj said. “I spoke to [season 6 winner] Jordin Sparks the other day and here she is starring in a movie [‘Sparkle’] and I said to her, ‘I remember watching you and picking up my phone.'” But there was just one thing: Minaj didn’t vote for Sparks, the last female to win Idol. She said her mother liked Sparks, but she and her little brother preferred the beatboxer Blake Lewis. “Because my little brother was more obsessed over the Blake person because he was like, more, you know, hip-hop, whatever,” she said. “But I told her [Sparks] that, ‘you know you’re a part of history, kind of. Because I remember calling and seeing your face and being inspired and hearing your story.” (Atlanta Black Star)
She also explained why “Idol” won her over other competing shows like “The X-Factor” last year.
Minaj said she had gotten calls from some of the many Idol imitators to join their panels, but when Idol call she answered. “This is such a credible brand,” she said. “It’s real…ly serious, it’s real deal, it’s not anything else other than really looking for talent. If I can be a part of that I’m really down for it.” (Atlanta Black Star)
Although still in its early stages, fellow judge Mariah Carey has already had to address rumors of an alleged melee with Minaj.
MTV News paid a visit to the “Idol” set at Lincoln Center on Monday (September 17), and the judges — including Minaj and Carey — were all smiles, immediately putting to rest tales of bad blood between the two. “How are we gonna feud in two days? A feud takes a little longer to spread out [than that],” Mariah responded, laughing, when asked if she and the YMCMB rapper were seeing eye-to-eye. “It’s fun, it’s music, it’s singing, it’s laughter,” she added, while Minaj chuckled along with her, looking amused at the beef rumors. Reports of Nicki’s latest entertainment venture heated up the Internet last weekend.
The “American Idol” judges’ panel is now complete with the naming of singer-rapper Nicki Minaj and country crooner Keith Urban. The Fox network officially tapped the pair with an announcement Sunday, confirming rumors surrounding them both just hours before the first round of auditions for next season was due to begin in New York. Minaj is getting $12 million for a one-year deal on the hit Fox singing series, a person in the music industry with knowledge of the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to publicly discuss the deal. (Wall Street Journal)
