Despite references to a July death, Minaj said the record was put together last year.

“Tho the lyrics of “We Miss You” eerily depict the circumstances surrounding my cousin’s death, I wrote & recorded that song on 5/24/2010,” she tweeted July 7th.

“It was sent to Mariah Carey & Keyshia Cole over a year ago for a possible feature. It didn’t make “Pink Friday” due to clearance issues.”

“Its an unauthorized leak. Thank u ALL for your kind words and well wishes. Love” (Nicki Minaj’s Twitter)

“We Miss You” officially premiered last night (July 6) courtesy of New York’s Hot 97 radio host Funkmaster Flex.

“Why’d you have to leave in July on a peaceful and serene summer night?” – Nicki Minaj. Funkmaster Flex let loose this previously unreleased track entitled “We Miss U” from the Young Money Barbie Queen Nicki Minaj moments ago which reminisces over the loss of a lost one. (Soul Culture)

While the track initially appeared to be a tribute, additional reporting also claimed it was an unreleased song.

Nicki Minaj remembers a lost loved one on the poignant “We Miss You.” While the song is reportedly an old recording, the timing is uncanny considering the tragic passing of her cousin earlier this week. “Why’d you have to leave in July on a peaceful and serene summer night?” she eerily asks. “I’ll never love again.” (Rap-Up)

Earlier this week, the New York Police Department confirmed Minaj’s cousin, Nicholas Telemaque, was murdered.

The NYPD tells E! that Telemaque was found with multiple gunshot wounds yesterday at 2:40 a.m. after officers responded to a 911 call of shots fired. “He was the victim of multiple gunshot wounds in his upper torso,” an NYPD spokesman said. EMS arrived on the scene shortly after and transferred him to Kings County Hospital where he was pronounced DOA. (E! News)
