St. Lunatics leader Nelly has taken a temporary leave of absence from the rap game to pursue a limited run as a radio host in Missouri.

According to reports, the Midwest-based rapper will host a radio show from his hometown.

St. Louis residents can tune in to hear their hometown boy weekdays between 3-7 p.m. on Hot 104.1 (WHHL-FM). Nelly becomes the radio station’s newest on-air personality for the afternoon drive. But don’t think Nelly has given up his day job. He’s temporarily filling in for radio host Staci Static, who is on maternity leave. Station executives expect Nelly’s on-air run to last for about a month. (Rap-Up)

The nations program director has confirmed the reports.

“It made perfect sense for the hometown boy to do it for the short term,” said Mickey Johnson, WHHL’s program director. “I was looking for someone local and someone who had that star power. Someone not to replace Staci but (someone) who could continue to drive the ratings and make it interesting.” The arrangement had been in the works for about three weeks, Johnson said, adding that Static was included in the decision. The rapper will reportedly begin his run as a radio host starting today (August 11).

Grammy award winning recording artist Nelly is the newest on air personality for WHHL-HOT 104.1FM. Nelly will be an on-air personality weekday afternoons beginning August 11 from 3pm-7pm. Station Manager, Shawneen Thompson and Program Director Mickey Johnson are “thrilled to bring St. Louis radio into the national spotlight by featuring the celebrity star power of Nelly”. (KPLR 11)

Aside from hosting, Nelly is currently working on his new album, 5.0.

This time around, he’s tapped high-profile producer Jim Jonsin to work alongside him in the studio. As the Press Association reports, Usher, Jamie Foxx and producer Dr. Luke have also signed on to collaborate on the new album, which will be titled ‘5.O’ — presumably because of the 2011 Mustang 5.0-liter V8 car that Nelly says will be featured on the album’s cover. Other names rumored to appear on ‘5.O’ include Janet Jackson, Diddy, Akon and, of course, the St. Lunatics. (AOL Radio Blog)
