Nelly Defends Decision To Take On Radio Gig, “That’s Why I’m Rich B*tch!”

Grammy-winning rapper Nelly has defended his decision to temporarily take-over a radio host job for his hometown St. Louis fans and addressed his critics.

Writing via Twitter, Nelly said the opportunity also allows him more exposure as he prepares to drop his next solo album, 5.0, in November.

“Nelly radio were u at????????????104.1 in stl and on line!!ustreaming in bout 30mns live on nellytv!,” he tweeted Thursday (August 12) afternoon.

“WOW I guess that’s why I’m rich b#tch!!cuzz if u don’t see the genus in being on the radio for a month and u have a album coming out!daa lol.” (Nelly’s Twitter)

Yesterday, Nelly launched his new radio gig in place of radio host Staci Static.

St. Louis residents can tune in to hear their hometown boy weekdays between 3-7 p.m. on Hot 104.1 (WHHL-FM). Nelly becomes the radio station’s newest on-air personality for the afternoon drive. But don’t think Nelly has given up his day job. He’s temporarily filling in for radio host Staci Static, who is on maternity leave. The station program director also confirmed the reports earlier this week.

“It made perfect sense for the hometown boy to do it for the short term,” said Mickey Johnson, WHHL’s program director. “I was looking for someone local and someone who had that star power. Someone not to replace Staci but (someone) who could continue to drive the ratings and make it interesting.” The arrangement had been in the works for about three weeks, Johnson said, adding that Static was included in the decision. The rapper will reportedly begin his run as a radio host starting today (August 11).

Grammy award winning recording artist Nelly is the newest on air personality for WHHL-HOT 104.1FM. Nelly will be an on-air personality weekday afternoons beginning August 11 from 3pm-7pm. Station Manager, Shawneen Thompson and Program Director Mickey Johnson are “thrilled to bring St. Louis radio into the national spotlight by featuring the celebrity star power of Nelly”. (KPLR 11)
