New York rapper Nas has reportedly been ordered to pay his estranged wife/singer Kelis more than $299,000 for spousal and child support.
According to reports, the ruling was made official on Monday (April 12).
Nas went to court Monday over his divorce with Kelis — and walked out a little lighter in the wallet. According to documents filed in L.A. County Superior Court, Nas had to immediately fork over $47,249.42 in back child support and $40,454 in back spousal support. The judge also ordered Nas to pay $10,000/month in spousal support until he pays off the $299,015.50 he owes Kelis. Nas also has to pay 90% of Kelis’ legal fees in the amount of $155,787.28. Lastly, Nas has to pay $48,549.83 to cover Kelis’ accounting expenses. (TMZ)
Reports last December showed Nas paying over $51,000 a month to Kelis in spousal and child support.
UPDATE: 7:54 PM PT The judge just ordered Nas to pay $40,454 in spousal support and $10,647 in child support. And, Nas must pay disso-queen Laura Wasser‘s attorney’s fees, to the tune of $46,022. Nas has just taken the stand in his divorce case, testifying that he wants overnights with his son. Kelis has custody for now, but Nas’ lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, wants his client to score some face time with the kid. (TMZ)
The two ex-lovers allegedly attempted to reconcile their differences last fall.
During Wednesday’s hearing Kelis said that the couple — who announced their intention to divorce in April after a four-year marriage — attempted to reconcile in September to no avail. She also reportedly testified that she has been having difficulty earning money because she is a new mother and doesn’t have a lot of job options outside of the music business. She told the court that Nas is slated to release two albums in 2010. (MTV)
On a recently leaked unreleased track called “Strong Will Continue,” Nas addressed his legal woes with Kelis.
On the track, he makes reference to a 1993 incident where martial arts film star Bruce Lee’s son Brandon was killed on set of The Crow. “Twisted and mangled, sort of like Bruce Lee life/Cursed with his son Brandon/ If that’s you and me Knight/ I pray our fate’s greater.” The 36 year-old MC is less than pleased with his reported court-ordered spousal and child support payments of $52,000 per month. “How in the h*ll am I supposed to stay comfy/ When I pay child support, alimony monthly,” he raps. And as for rumors that he cheated on his wife, Nas has something to say on that topic as well. “So I’ve stuck with some married women so fine, cheating while their husband rushing on the 40-yard line/ Wonder if this is what my ex did the whole time.” (Rap-Up)
