Nas claims he knew about the record courtesy of producer Salaam Remi prior to its global release.

Nas confirms to XXL that Amy Winehouse’s classic song is about him… Rumor has it that Winehouse once had a crush on Nas, but interpretations on the song vary. “Mr. Destiny, 9 and 14,” Winehouse sings, referencing Nas’s daughter, Destiny, and the September 14 birth date she shared with the rapper. “Nobody stands between me and my man/’Cause it’s me and Mr. Jones.” Nas recalled to XXL about hearing about the Salaam Remi-produced song prior to its release. “I don’t really remember if Salaam, who was really close to her, who introduced us, if he told me about it or not,” Nas told XXL. “I don’t remember right now. But, I heard a lot about it before I even heard the song.” (XXL Mag)

In August, Nas reflected on Winehouse and his close relationship to her.

“She was a genuine person,” Nas said referring to Winehouse. “She was like, real. When you talked to her, she was real. She was struggling with a lot of things in her life, but she was a real artist. She was like a sister to me, like a little sister. We had the same birthday so she just had this big, big spirit for this little body. You know what I mean? I wish she was here today, man. God bless her soul.” (“106 & Park”)

A week prior, Nas tweeted about his love for the late Winehouse.

“Amy was my sister. Genuine person who spoke her mind & didn’t give a F*ck!,” he tweeted August 3rd.

“We shared the same bday! We was planning a party this Sept 14th! I gotta celebrate for her!” (Nas’ Twitter)

In July, MTV published an Amy Winehouse interview from 2007 featuring her listing her most coveted rap duets.

“There’s so many people I’d love to work with: Nas, Mos Def. I’d love to work with Busta Rhymes, I’d love to work with Rah Digga … I love them,” she said in 2007. “I learned a lot of stuff about how to write songs from people like that. I just really like them, and if they like my stuff, cool. … If they want to do a track, I’d love to.” (MTV)
