Rap veteran Nas recently discussed crossing the finishing line with his upcoming Life Is Good album and why he still gets a little worked up despite over two decades in the rap game.
According to Nas, reaching the end of his long-awaited solo follow-up to 2008’s Untitled recently got him a little anxious.
Despite having more than 20 years in the game and a number of classic albums already under his belt, Nas admitted to MTV News he’s “a little nervous” about completing his 10th solo album, Life is Good. Luckily, he has friends like producer Salaam Remi to reassure him. When Nas and Salaam were putting the finishing touches on the album, the rapper admitted doubt started to creep in. “At this point when we’re mastering, I start to get a little nervous,” Nas told MTV News on June 12. “I start thinking about those records I could’ve, should’ve, would’ve done that didn’t make it.” It’s not that Nas lacks confidence, but in the past he has been known to leave some pretty amazing records on the cutting-room floor. In fact, on 2002’s The Lost Tapes, he unearthed gems like the soulful “Doo Rags” and “No Idea’s Original.” For Life is Good, however, Nas firmly believes that he has all the right songs on there. In early June, Nasty Nas discussed the motivation behind his Life Is Good album cover.
“Life, love, joy, anger, celebration. There’s so many things you can see on that album cover. You see my life. My life is on that album cover,” he explained in an interview. “It just happened. It happened on its own. It was not a lot of effort at all. … [Have I heard from Kelis yet?] We just put it out, so it’s still way too fresh. … [Will I hear from her about it?] Eventually at some point.” (Rap-Up)
Earlier the same week, a Life Is Good promotional video revealed the long-awaited album’s cover.
The one-and-half minute clip clears up the use of Kelis’ infamous green dress, ending with a clip from Nas’ episode of VH1’s “Behind the Music” where he reiterates a moment from his public and bitter divorce from her. “She took her stuff out of the house and left her green wedding dress, and that was all she left,” Nas said on the episode.
