Gunplay used the time before rap mentor Rick Ross‘ mid-2006’s Port of Miami debut album to venture into pimping.

It would be nearly a decade between the crew’s formation and Ross’s breakout success with “Hustlin'” in 2006. In the meantime, Gunplay says, he made his money as a drug dealer and later as a pimp. “When the dope game dried up, my next best thing is the b*tches. So my next move was po’ pimpin. This has been my dream since I was a kid. Since I broke my first b*tch, I always knew, yeah, I’m gonna own an escort service. I’m gonna take this po’ pimpin’ to some mo’ pimpin’. If [Def Jam] don’t like it, they’ll be f*cked up, ’cause I’m doing it.” (Miami New Times)

He also detailed just how much money can be made in the escort industry.

“When you see [the Apples and Onions escorts], they’re bad, you gon’ want to spend that. Sex has been selling since the beginning of time. It’s never gonna stop. It’s never a drought, it’s never a dull year. The business is a billion dollars a year. You’re not gonna tell me I can’t get at least $15 million out of that $1 billion. It’s impossible.” (Miami New Times)

Earlier this summer, Gunplay made headlines after signing a Def Jam deal.

“It just feels like all the work over these years ain’t go in vain,” Gunplay said about his new situation. “God is good. It’s his plan. It’s his plan. I ain’t got nothing to do with this. I’m just here for the ride, bro. I got an album coming out, I just signed with Def Jam two days ago. The ink just dried. So look out for the untitled album. So far it’s untitled, I’m sitting down with Rozay and we’re going to make everything happen so we can produce the best product possible.” (VIBE TV)

Recently, rap veteran Akinyele got involved in the adult entertainment industry by opening his own gentleman’s club in Las Vegas.

Rapper Akinyele, responsible for the filthy 1996 hit “Put It In Your Mouth,” is apparently making some serious dough in Las Vegas. Not off gambling winnings, but as the owner of a gentlemen’s club on the strip. “We decided to officially launch LollyPops and align ourselves during the Mayweather vs. Cotto fight weekend and I can proudly say there are now two winners,” he said. The grand opening of LollyPops was last weekend. Akinyele and his partners partners Cliff Dutton and Jay racked in about $5 million. It’s an impressive feat for an artist who gained some traction in the adult industry performing at various strip club establishments. (Complex)
