Meek said his first criminal charge as an adult involved weapon possession.

“I was 18, just turned [into] an adult when I went to jail,” he reveals, recapping his brush with the law that changed everything. “I caught a case and had 57 charges. Young guys that get caught with a gun — they’re gonna automatically charge you up. All I did was walk outside with a gun.” Meek explained that the long months he spent in jail made it clear to him that he needed to make a life change. “In jail you ain’t got nothing to do but sit in there and think all day,” he said. “I just [didn’t] wanna die, I [didn’t] wanna get shot or get life in jail because that’s the usual script. I ended up going about 20-something months and realized that wasn’t the place I wanted to be.” (MTV)

Rather than go back to crime, Meek said he completely put his all into music-making.

After that wake-up call, Meek got on his grind, dedicating all of his time to music. “I really put my life into rapping,” he explained. “They let me out on house arrest and the judge gave me permission to go to the studio, and that taught me another lesson because every day [I was] going straight to the studio for 12 hours straight and I started putting up six songs a day for three months straight — that’s what gave me my little jump start.” (MTV)

No stranger to law enforcement, Mill got detained by police earlier this month in Philadelphia.

“cops cost me a lot of money tonight …..taking pics of me like I’ma f*ckin joke….no charges just holding http://instagr.am/p/Rev6I2CkFA/,” he tweeted November 1st.

“N*gga I ain’t get knocked they was just tryna hold me back! Just scooped my n*gga #brick Feds gave him 10yea http://instagr.am/p/RfTF8GikEw/”

“I ain’t get locked up…definitely not in NYC with no gun! Cops just harassed and violated me last night in Philly just for being famous!”

“The crazy part about is I really had a handcuff and Rolex on my wrist yesterday…. Really #DreamsAndNightmares” (Meek Mill’s Twitter)

Over the summer, he got scolded by a judge over his rap lyrics.

Rapper Meek Mill, whose real name is Robert Williams, was in court today for a prior gun and drug conviction. Lou Savino, attorney for Williams, tells Fox 29 that today’s appearance is for a status hearing on that previous charge. The defendant was paroled to House Arrest, which is completed, and now is on probation. Williams has to go to court every 3 to 6 months to make sure he is in compliance. William’s song called, “The Ride” mentions mentions the D.A. that is handling his case. In court, the judge warned the rapper not to mention the D.A. in his lyrics. (My Fox Philly)
