Maybach Music Group's Meek Mill recently talked about what inspires him being from Philadelphia and why he is never worried about laying his pen down to churn out potential hit records.
With handfuls of amateurs aiming for hip-hop fame, Meek said hard work and a drive to outwork competition is what fueled his rise to the top.
“Being from Philly, you’ve got to know how to rap if you’re gonna rap,” Meek said in an interview. “It’s a million people that rap out here, it’s a lot of good rappers, so, to turn out to be one of the hottest, you have to do a lot of practice because it’s a lot of other guys out here that’ll take your spot real fast. I think being from Philly plays a big part in it. We’re a strong city, we have a lot of talented rappers. If you want to be one of the best, you have to outwork everybody.” (FADER TV)
He also discussed the importance of traveling to make new music and the confidence he has in record-making.
“I get inspired off of different things,” Meek added. “I get inspired from LA, New York to Miami, even Philly myself. I just like to put myself in different moods and zones so I can make different music. You know what I’m saying? If you stay in the same spot — the place you’re at will inspire your music even more, so I like to move around. … I’m never nervous about making my music. My fans like my music, they like whatever I do. They’ve been liking it so I always just do me and have fun with it and however it tunrs out, it turns out. I’m a critic of myself. If I like it then I think my fans will like it too.” (FADER TV)
Last summer, Mill credited rap veteran Nas for inspiring his music.
“Shout out to the big homie, Nas,” Meek said in an interview with radio veteran Angie Martinez. “I gotta lot of love for that, man. … Yeah, he gave me a lot of confidence with that. Now, when I go in the booth, I just be saying whatever. I take my time. [Nas] is like I’m going in the right direction already.” (Hot 97)
Despite his own fame and popularity, Meek recently bigged up rap newcomer Trinidad James.
“Trinidad James is spitting that fire right now,” Meek said in an interview. “He’s shining, he’s living, he’s buzzing fast. He’s doing his thing. All love. You know what I’m saying? He’s a cool homie. I met him a couple of times, he’s a cool boy. He’s doing his thing.” (Rap-Up TV)
