Mariah Carey’s “Push” Chosen By Lionsgate, Oprah Winfrey On Deck To Promote

Grammy-winning singer Mariah Carey‘s film Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire has had its’ distribution rights acquired by Lionsgate.

The 2009 Sundance Film winner’s rights were purchased on Monday (February 2).

Push is only the third film in Sundance history to win both the grand jury prize and the audience awards in the U.S. dramatic competition. Lionsgate reportedly paid north of $5 million. Studio intends to release the film, based on the 1996 book about a Harlem teenager, this year. (Variety)

Helping promote the film will be Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry.

Winfrey and Perry will support Lionsgate’s distribution of Push, through their respective motion picture companies, Harpo Films and 34th Street Films. It will be the first film affiliated with Perry’s 34th Street banner. “I’ve never seen anything like it. The moment I saw [it], I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie,” Winfrey said in a statement. (Market Watch)

The film features a variety of renowned actors and musicians.

Cast members include Mo’Nique, Gabourey “Gabby” Sidibe, Paula Patton, Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd and Lenny Kravitz. (PR Newswire)

Push is a drama-based film centering on a New York City woman.

In the movie, Mariah plays a Harlem social worker ministering to an obese, HIV-positive woman impregnated twice by her father. (IMDb)
