[With the must-have Madden 16 finally available this week, EA Sports Creative Director Rex Dickson tells SOHH what motivates his team to continue making the best, and only, football title on the market every year.]
I actually get this question a lot and it generally revolves around, “What’s motivating you to compete if you have no competition?”
The analogy I usually like to give them is when you go to the gym and you work out, are you looking at what other people are doing or are you just challenging yourself?
You get guys like me in here, I played college ball, and Clint Oldenburg, he played offensive line for the Redskins and the Patriots. We have another guy who used to play quarterback for the [Florida] Gators. You put enough athletes on a team together, they’re not only used to competing but they’re used to competing with themselves.
They know how to push themselves to be better. That’s kind of our motivation.
To think that we’re not going to be self-motivated, to make this game that we love, the best it can possibly be, then that would just fade away or disappear and not exist with someone else not trying to beat us, I think it’s a little bit ridiculous.

That’s like telling me if you can’t challenge yourself, you need somebody to challenge you and I’m just not built that way and my team’s not built that way.
We take the quality of Madden very seriously, we love it, we think it’s great. We take the criticisms very much to heart and it’s our job and responsibility. We take it more to heart than any other one because there ‘is’ no competition.

We have a responsibility since there’s not another one out there that we have to deliver absolute best in class quality.
We out it to these people that want to play a great football game and don’t have any other choice to deliver something that’s epic and awesome. That’s what motivates us.
