Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller recently discussed his new reality television show, “Mac Miller and The Most Dope Family,” and revealed just how much he initially hesitated getting involved with the project.
Miller said in the beginning, there was a lot of scrambling around to find his niche.
“Being real, I don’t like reality shows. When they first hit me up to do a TV show, we were trying to come up with ideas of different things that we could do, just different types of TV shows or whatever. Then we just kind of thought, “Hey–I’m about to do my album, it might be good to show people the rise of the album, the evolution of it.”” (XXL Mag)
Mac said it did not take long before they had to switch up their reality television angle and start with a fresh idea.
“So we started doing that, but then it was the kind of thing where we don’t want to just sit here and f*ckin’ make music on camera all day and just give away all of our secrets,” he added. “Let’s just have some fun with it. So we kind of got more comfortable with the cameras and started just kind of cutting up and being weird. Reality shows are weird because you’ve gotta be real and I can’t really act real–you know? If I’m doing something for a camera it’s gotta be some that’s super extra’d out, or just very weird and awkward. So we just went super extra’d out.” (XXL Mag)
Earlier this month, Midwest rapper Freddie Gibbs shared his opinon on hip-hop artists taking on reality television.
“I think that’s wack. I think you weak if you’re on a reality show, really,” Gibbs said when asked for his take on rappers landing starring roles in reality television shows. “You know what I mean? I think you should just do your music and do your thing and if you’re mad at me saying that, come see me.” (WGCI)
Last summer, “Love & Hip Hop Atlanta” cast member Lil Scrappy spoke to SOHH about hip-hop artists swaying away from the reality television trend.
“I’m going to be honest with you, I don’t think [it’s rappers being less] camera shy, I just think there’s certain people that let it be known they are super thugs and they are super human and if they were to let people into their life and have them find out that they weren’t super, that they just like them, they probably wouldn’t feel them as much. Whatever they would try to put out there [on store shelves] wouldn’t work, you feel me? Only certain people can be loved for being real. Sometimes people are a little too real, get carried away and so you wouldn’t know.” (SOHH)
