Grammy-winning rapper Ludacris recently talked about his stay in the rap game and why injecting hip-hop with humor has been beneficial for the genre.
For Luda, he also tries to present multiple sides of his personality throughout the music he releases.
“Humor in hip-hop is important to me because I feel like I like to laugh and I love watching comedies so of course it comes through in my music,” Luda said in an interview. “The one thing that I feel separates me from a lot of people is balancing so much and showing you so many different sides of myself whether you always have the serious side and you have the funny side and you have the story telling side so I just try to reinvent and be as creative as possible and talk about things that I haven’t necessarily talked about and continue surprising people and not being so redundant.” (Artist Direct)
Rapper Nicki Minaj recently stressed the importance of artists not placing too much seriousness behind their raps.
“It bothers me when people take themselves too seriously. It’s like, loosen the f*ck up,” she says. “At the end of the day, this is entertainment. We should be entertained.” Minaj hopes to keep listeners amused with her still-untitled debut album, which is set to feature production help from David Banner, Polow Da Don and Swizz Beatz. (Spin)
Earlier this year, Luda talked about controlling his Disturbin’ Tha Peace record label.
“I actualy wrote a song called ‘Tell It Like It Is,” Luda explained in an interview referring to his 2006 record. “And one of the things that I said was ‘The first thing I did was signed myself to myself,’ which was Disturbin’ Tha Peace Records and I incorporated it at a young age therefore if somebody wanted to sign me, they had to sign my company. I have a very unique deal, I came out with an independent album and I was selling records on my own, which gave me leverage when Def Jam came to me and said ‘We wanna sign you to a contract.’ So I’m sitting there saying well this is what I’m doing on my own, I’m already making this amount of money. What can you do for me that’s going to make me interested in signing to your company, so I definitely encourage everyone to get as much leverage as you can. The only way you can do that is by putting your b*lls on the table. All the way on it. Because man, it’s crazy, a lot of people want success and aren’t willing to do what it takes to get success or earn success.” (FUSE TV)
