Grammy-winning rappers Lil’ Wayne and Kanye West have made Billboard‘s Top 20 “Music Money Makers List” of 2008 with combined earnings of $100 million.
The duo made the annual list with combined profits of nearly $100 million.
At No. 1 is Madonna with $242,176,466. Lil’ Wayne comes in at No. 12 with $57,441,334. Mary J. Blige follows behind at No. 19 with $43,472,850. Closing out the Top 20 is Kanye West with $42,552,402. (Billboard)
Placement within the Top 20 consisted of a combination of various profit-generating actions by each artist.
Regardless of genre, retail sales or radio play, each of the 20 acts toured in 2008. For almost all of them, touring generated the most revenue. And in a year when recorded-music sales declined yet again, many earned more at the box office than ever before. (Absolute Madonna)
Much of Weezy’s success has come from his mega selling album Tha Carter III.
Tha Carter III, rapper Lil Wayne’s latest, sold almost 3 million copies last year making it the best-selling album of 2008. With total sales of 2.88 million copies, Tha Carter III‘s ascension to the top of the year-end sales chart is significant primarily because it marks the first time since Nielsen Soundscan began tracking sales in 1991 that the best-selling album of a calendar year has moved less than 3 million copies. Ye’s profit-generating Glow in the Dark tour kicked-off last spring running through the summer both in the United States and overseas.
The tour will be co-headlined by Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D., and will continue on for two months making a stop at the legendary Madison Square Garden in New York City. (Vibe)
