Grammy-winning rapper Lil Wayne is going to take fans a bit deeper into his personal life in an interview for the season premiere of veteran reporter Katie Couric's "Katie" talk show next week.
An in-depth teaser of Weezy’s one-on-one chat has made its rounds online this weekend.
The Young Money rapper, who was previously interviewed by Couric on “60 Minutes” in 2009, discusses his health, his time in prison, family, and his childhood. He reveals that his mother pulled him out of high school for his safety. “I had an album out, I was platinum already, and I was still trying to go to public school,” said Weezy. “She saw me getting ready for school one day and she saw me putting my gun in my backpack. She said, ‘You gotta bring that to school with you?’ And I remember I asked her, ‘You don’t want me to bring it?’ She thought about it. She said, ‘I do.'” So he dropped out of high school, got his GED, and went on to attend college. (Rap-Up)
The Young Money star also uses the chat to discuss serving nearly an entire year behind bars on a gun conviction a couple years ago.
He also shared his experience in prison. When asked if the other inmates were excited to see him, he responded, “It’s jail. For the first 20 or 30 seconds, you’re like, ‘Oh my God, that’s really him,’ then the reality of where you’re at clicks right back in.” The full interview airs Monday, Sept. 9. (Rap-Up)
No stranger to Katie, Wayne previously shared an intimate conversation with her for a pre-Grammy Awards special back in 2009.
“In New Orleans, reality is handed to you very very early,” Wayne explained. “[Music], for me, was a way of always showing somebody my intelligence…I work very very hard, Ms. Katie. We don’t approach things like we’re good, we just approach it like we’re gonna work and we’re gonna work hard and hard works pays off. If you work that hard, then you’re gonna get good and good turns to great and hopefully I’m the definition of that…I will stand up for marijuana any day…I have migraines, right, I have migraines that just make me want to kill myself…I do what I want, and I love to smoke.” (All Access Grammy Special)
Late last year, the Young Money boss described his time behind bars and said he regretted the consequences which come with carrying a weapon.
“At that point, you’re looking for help from anywhere, you’re looking for support from anywhere possible,” Weezy said in an interview. “So to hear that [retired NFL champion] Brett Favre, that he’s praying for me every night, man, you know, that put a smile on my face for a long time and to smile in that place is, is almost impossible. For me, thank God, thank God it was just an experience. And for other people, it’s totally different, it’s a lot worse. Everyday, it was just me finding out something new about that place, learning something new, staying away from things that I knew I was supposed to stay away from, never ever imagining I’d be there and dealing with the fact that I was. … Before I leave, I want to say, you mentioned in 2010 I was locked up for a weapon.
