Leonardo DiCaprio & Jonah Hill Call Up NY Rap Vet, Hip-Hop TV Show On Deck

Hollywood stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill are reportedly going to take a step away from their on-screen chemistry to work alongside rap veteran Q-Tip on an upcoming television series.

According to reports, the scripted TV series will be loosely based on Tip’s run in the 1990’s.

There is no writer yet for the drama project, which will be produced through DiCaprio’s production company Appian Way and is expected to be taken out to networks next week. Q-Tip, who has been friends with DiCaprio for a long time, is a founding member of the acclaimed hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, which he started in 1985 with his high school friends Phife Dawg, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White. The show will also place a heavy emphasis on how hip-hop music evolved over the past couple decades.

The drama project will draw from Q-Tip’s experiences with the group and with The Native Tongues collective that A Tribe Called Quest was a member of, which brought together late 1980s and early 1990s hip-hop artists known for their positive-minded, Afrocentric lyrics. The show will reflect on the stories of their friendship and how their music played a part in culture then and influenced the music of today. Q-Tip is repped by CAA; DiCaprio is with LBI; and Hill is with WME and LBI. DiCaprio and Hill currently star in Martin Scorsese‘s The Wolf Of Wall Street, which is nominated for two Golden Globes on Sunday, best film – comedy or musical – and best actor, DiCaprio. Speaking to talk show host Rachel Ray last month, G-Unit’s 50 Cent revealed a serious interest in working with DiCaprio.

“I got a call from De Niro,” Fif said. “I’ve seen him in a lot of movies but he’s like the guy from Goodfellas, ‘Paulie,’ he’s like, ‘Eh, this project, I think should do it.’ I’m like, ‘You think? Okay.’ Yeah. [A collaboration wish list?] I have one. Leonardo DiCaprio, yeah. He don’t miss, he don’t miss. And I just saw his new project, Wolf of Wall Street, a private screening, it was [fantastic]. He was in there with me. Yeah, I was like, ‘This is really, this is cool.’ Yeah, like, you’re going to come watch it with me. It was an exciting night. I’m on his fan list right now. There were a few people there that I had worked with in the past. Terrence Winters, he actually wrote The Wolf of Wall Street, he wrote Get Rich or Die Tryin’ for me. Yeah, it was a good room. If you’re in a room and you’re the hottest person in the room, you know you’re in the wrong room.” (“The Rachel Ray Show”)

In November, rap stars 2 Chainz and Kanye West came through to perform at Leonardo DiCaprio’s 39th birthday.

Last night, Leonardo DiCaprio celebrated his birthday at TAO Downtown in New York City. DiCaprio invited his friend 2 Chainz to perform for his special day, and the ATLien performed several of his hit singles for the crowd. However, midway through his set, 2 Chainz called DiCaprio on stage for a speech. From there, 2 Chainz brought out a special guest: Kanye West. Kanye had flown to New York City from Los Angeles, where just the night before he had been called upon by Tyler, The Creator to be special guest at the Odd Future Carnival. Alongside 2 Chainz, Kanye performed their collaborations, “Mercy” and “Birthday Song.” But Kanye went on to perform other songs from his catalog, including “Good Life” and “Runaway.” (Complex)
