Christian rapper Lecrae's new Gravity album is reportedly en route to push big numbers and possibly debut strong in the music sales chart in its opening week.
Based on weekend estimates, Lecrae’s sixth solo album could become the second best-selling album next week.
Matchbox Twenty should debut at #1 next week with a total just into six digits–and that’ll easily be enough to give it the top spot next Tuesday. Fighting it out for #2 will be the full-length debut from rockers Imagine Dragons (an EP has been out since May) and the latest from Christian hip-hop artist Lecrae (we didn’t either). Here’s how the not so pretty picture headed into the weekend: * Matchbox Twenty (Atlantic) 100-110k * Lecrae (Reach) 65-70k * Imagine Dragons (Interscope) 65-70k (HITS Daily Double)
A few days ago, Lecrae gave SOHH readers reasons to buy the new LP.
“It’s reality rap. It’s realer than most of the stuff you hear on the radio. What I talk about, I live. It’s real. You listen to a lot of music and there’s a lot of guns being shot but no bodies showing up. So you begin to wonder if any of this stuff is real, all this money people claim to have and then go bankrupt and to jail for tax evasion. I’m not going to lie to you, I’m just going to tell you the truth. I’m going to talk about my life, I’m going to talk about my real relationships, my faith and I don’t have a desire to be accepted by people, I’m already accepted by God. He also stressed the importance of Gravity bringing something new to the rap game.
“The fifth reason is because there’s a missing piece in hip-hop right now. Gravity is just an acknowledgement of the weight of life. Most of us realize this but when it comes to music, when you listen to hip-hop, it’s an escape from the reality. It’s about going to the club, getting high or drunk, let’s make a lot of money so I can escape this reality. That’s all good but your man is still dead and there’s still people dying around us. There’s still problems. So Gravity is just embracing those realities because they make us who we are. They cause us to look for hope and that’s what I’m here to do, provide some hope.” (SOHH 5 Reasons)
Last week, Christian recording artist TobyMac topped the music sales chart.
Leading the way this week is Slaughterhouse’s Welcome to: Our House at No. 2 behind TobyMac’s Eye On It (69,000). With seven days in the books, the group’s long-awaited sophomore album has shelled out 51,800 units. (SOHH Sales Wrap)
