Newly-signed Sony Music/Columbia Records artist Kreayshawn has come forward to address recent comments she made toward reigning rap queen Nicki Minaj and denied looking to spark a rap beef with the Young Money star.
Referencing a Complex magazine interview she gave last month addressing Minaj’s Barbie image, Kreayshawn co-signed the rapper’s sense of strength.
“I’m not hating on anybody. I’m not coming for anybody’s neck. I say one thing about Nicki Minaj that’s not a diss at all and you have Nicki Minaj fans barking at me,” Kreayshawn explained in an interview. “I love Nicki’s thing, she’s independent and a powerful woman. I think it’s important for different female voices to be heard. I’m representing for something that hasn’t been said yet or [hasn’t been said] in a long time [which is] to be yourself, be creative. I don’t want people to be like ‘I’m going to dress like Kreayshawn,’ or ‘I’m going to do my hair like Kreayshawn.’ I want people to be different and follow their own lane.” (Billboard)
Last month, Kreayshawn questioned Minaj’s image and influence on younger generations.
“No disrespect to [Nicki Minaj] because she’s got talent. She’s got an image. But when it comes to inspiring young women, her message is to be a Barbie-to be plastic, to be fake, to all have blonde hair.” (Complex)
The West Coast rapper also references “Barbie” on her new “Gucci, Gucci” single.
“I smoke a million Swisher blunts and I ain’t never coming down/B*tch you ain’t no Barbie I see you work at Arby’s/Number 2, super-sized Hurry up I’m starving/Gnarly, radical, on the block I’m magical.” (“Gucci, Gucci”)
Outside of Minaj, Kreayshawn recently addressed comparisons to pop star Ke$ha.
“She’s cool,” Kreayshawn said about Ke$ha, adding that she believes the comparisons stem from both artists being White. “I wouldn’t compare myself to her, but she’s pretty sweet. I think people just compare something to something else just ’cause they don’t know what it is and they want to relate it to something like, ‘this is like Ke$ha.’ They don’t want to be like, ‘this is new. I never heard of it. It’s Kreayshawn. No, it’s just some shit we kinda heard before.’ Kreayshawn is Kreayshawn. People are gonna be like, ‘this reminds of Kreayshawn’ in a couple of months. I’m trying to work.” (XXL Mag)
