Having made a name for herself virally, West Coast rap newcomer Kreayshawn has stood by her decision to opt going indie and take a chance under a major record company like Columbia.
With the ink finally dried off a speculated one million dollar contract, the Oakland native said Columbia offered her creative freedom.
“Columbia was the best because they were like, ‘We want to do exactly what you’ve been doing.’ I’ve been directing music videos, so they’re like, ‘We want you to keep doing that.’ I do a little graphic design, and they had me make my logo. The music that I’m making — ‘Gucci Gucci’ — [is] going to be the single that they push,” Kreayshawn explained in an interview. “We never made the [‘Gucci Gucci’] video with the intention of anything. We knew it was a great song, we knew that the video [was] going to be dope. We didn’t put it out like we knew this was secretly going to launch everything, because everything was organic.” (MTV)
Earlier in the week, Kreayshawn issued a formal statement confirming reports of her Columbia deal.
East Oakland native, visual artist, swag assassin, and undercat Kreayshawn (Kray-shawn) has officially signed with Columbia Records, a division of Sony Music Entertainment. The 21 year-old will release “Gucci Gucci” via digital retailers on Tuesday, June 14th and prepare her forthcoming full-length debut album, due later this year. Described by GQ Magazine as a “loveable oddball,” Kreayshawn says of the new partnership, “I’m excited to work with my new Columbia family. They understand my vision and are going to let me continue everything I’ve been doing. My hope is to inspire others to be young, wild, and free.” (Press Release)
While she has yet to confirm/deny the rumor, reports claim her deal is worth an estimated $1 million.
Since her performance at SXSW in Austin, Texas in March, Kreayshawn has had the Internet going nuts. Rumored to have recently signed a $1 million contract with Sony after dropping her new video, ‘Gucci Gucci,’ which accrued 1.6 million hits on YouTube in two weeks, Kreayshawn is the next logical step for hipster hip-hop fans, following fellow West Coast oddball-indie success stories Odd Future and Lil B. Still continuing to make a name for herself amongst hip-hop heads, the rapper has already been compared to pop star Ke$ha.
“She’s cool,” Kreayshawn said about Ke$ha, adding that she believes the comparisons stem from both artists being White. “I wouldn’t compare myself to her, but she’s pretty sweet. I think people just compare something to something else just ’cause they don’t know what it is and they want to relate it to something like, ‘this is like Ke$ha.’ They don’t want to be like, ‘this is new. I never heard of it. It’s Kreayshawn. No, it’s just some shit we kinda heard before.’ Kreayshawn is Kreayshawn. People are gonna be like, ‘this reminds of Kreayshawn’ in a couple of months. I’m trying to work.” (XXL Mag)
