West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar recently dissected his infectious “B*tch Don’t Kill My Vibe” music video and what hidden gems were tucked away in the eye-opening visual.
While he would not dish out everything, Lamar did suggest there was meaning in the all-white everything attire worn for the visual’s funeral theme.
“It’s a few different hidden messages over there but the most obvious showing that even a grieving situation, your vibe can’t be killed,” Lamar said when he came offstage at this weekend’s Hangout Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama. “There’s other little intricate things in there, I like to leave it up to the viewers and the listeners.” In his conversation with Kendrick, Sway pointed out the similarities between the rapper’s all-white funeral and West African Yoruba customs where death is celebrated as a transition into another life. “That was an idea,” Kendrick confirmed, not giving up much else. Kendrick also explained Hollywood veteran Mike Epps‘ unexpected role in the clip.
As far as the hilarious Mike Epps cameo, where the comedian baptizes Kendrick in a pool full of liquor: “That was just being funny. That was him being crazy,” Lamar said. “I’ve always been a fan of him and that was just something right on the spot just because we were there.” (MTV)
Despite dropping last year, the flashy music video premiered online earlier this month.

All jokes aside, the video showcases beautiful scenes of the Compton emcee spitting his verses in a desolate hillside. We also see Lamar and fellow mourners get turnt up during a funeral procession with plenty of champagne bottles being popped. He also used the visual to show off Aftermath boss Dr. Dre‘s Beats By Dre headphones line.
The elaborate clip features shots from a solemn funeral service, with all of the attendees wearing white. Those shots are juxtaposed against images of Lamar popping champagnes bottles in a limo with friends as well as performing the song in a lush, wide open meadow. There’s also a bit of conspicuous product placement, with a lingering shot of a Beats by Dre “Pill” speaker, a shout-out to Lamar’s Aftermath label head Dr. Dre, and Beats co-founder Jimmy Iovine of Interscope Records.
