West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar recently reacted to buzz about fellow hip-hop artist Nas boasting about his gold-selling good kid, m.A.A.d city solo effort being his favorite album of the year.
Shocked by the accolade, Lamar described how much it meant to get props from a hip-hop veteran of Nas’ caliber.
“That’s crazy, I didn’t hear that,” he said. “That’s amazing, just off the fact that it’s Nas. You can hear the influence [of him] on my storytelling. For somebody who’s been a lead player in this game for so many years, a veteran as far as longevity and skill, that’s an accomplishment just on words alone.” (FUSE)
Earlier this month, Nasty Nas spoke on the impact good kid, m.A.A.d city had on him.
“No disrespect to nobody else in rap music, but Kendrick Lamar. I’m really happy about his record. I needed that. His record reaches you. It gives you hope. …Also, Meek Mill. His energy is amazing. … [New music?] Yes. It has started. I must tell you. I can’t stop now. I’m in a great zone.” (SF Gate)
A few weeks ago, Maybach Music Group’s Meek Mill picked his LP as one of the best from last year.
“My favorite album of 2012? Ohhh. I don’t know. Let me think. I got a favorite album I would say. I would say the best album beside mine is Kendrick, 2 Chainz. What else is my favorite albums? What else is fire that I’d be listening to? I just don’t want to say the politically [correct] answer. I want to say who we’re really listening to. We be listening to [Chief Keef‘s ‘Love Sosa’]. Yo Gotti, Lil Reese and sh*t.” (Rap-Up)
To date, the LP has sold more than 630,000 copies since dropping last fall.
West Coast rapper Kendrick Lamar’s good kid, m.A.A.d city dropped six slots to No. 20 with 19,100. With three months out of the way, Lamar’s studio effort has sold 639,200 pieces. (SOHH Sales Wrap)
