R&B singer Kelis has addressed speculation that artists like Rihanna and Lady Gaga have intentionally copied her fashion looks.
Kelis feels that it may be their stylists who are behind the swagger jacking.
“I tried not to see, but it’s noticeable,” she revealed in an interview. “They’re really young. What else are they supposed to do? I’ve been around for a long time and that’s what artists do; we take from each other and we recycle. And quite frankly, it may not even be them. It might be stylists that have been around as long as I have and are like, ‘Hey, let’s recycle this on these younger artists.’ I’m not offended by it. I don’t really have much feeling about it, honestly. It just keeps me on my toes and allows me to continue moving forward, so it’s cool. I really don’t see it as a bad thing. I guess it means I’m on the right track.” (Rap-Up)
Last year, Kelis talked about Rihanna and Cassie copying her trend-setting hair styles.
“Well I was definitely the first to do it,” Kelis explained in an interview. “The only other person I would give credit before me is Pepa. Other than that, I expect them to copy me. What else are they supposed to do? They’re young. God bless them. Yeah. At the end of the day, everyone is just waiting for someone to do something new and if it’s generally me, then I’ll take that responsibility (laughs)… Because I named my son Knight, I think I’ve been in a kind of Joan of Arc, World of Battles vibe. So everything has been lots of armor and metal for right now. But I have no idea where I’m going with it.” (Honey Mag)
She is also putting together her upcoming album, Flesh Bone, under producer Will.i.am‘s record label.
“Will and I worked on my last album together, and I love the fact that — a lot of producers don’t know music. They might know the genre that they’re doing, but he’s great because he has a really vast knowledge of music,” Kelis told MTV News about her new boss. “There’s not a song you can mention or an era of music that you can mention that he doesn’t know about or doesn’t understand what made it that [successful]. I think that’s the key in trying to do something fresh.” (MTV)
Kelis is currently in the midst of a divorce from rapper Nas.
According to documents filed last week, Kelis said in a declaration, “… it would be in the best interest of both of us if our marital status is terminated as soon as possible.” Because she fears that the legal proceedings could take years to figure out, Kelis has requested that the judge immediately terminate their marriage — and wait until a later time to resolve “all other issues.” As for the odds that the two will rekindle their romance — Kelis stated, “I believe there is no possibility of reconciliation with [Nas].” (TMZ)
