Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West's four-part BBC Radio 1 in-depth series has kicked off this week with part one showcasing Yeezus giving a strong take on today's hip-hop culture.
In Ye’s perspective, hip-hop is currently running the entertainment world.
“I have to remind Pusha T that this is Pusha T because the radio, if they’re not playing a song of his that has an R&B hook on it or works at a certain level of trap tempo and plays in Club Liv, it’s like we forget about that Clipse album that meant everything,” Ye explained. “I did ‘Can’t Tell Me Nothing,’ I like it, but it’s been commercialized to the point where it’s like, and I’m not mentioning no names, but when people used to use the term ‘R&B n*gga,’ right? People used to use the term but then it was rappers. But then rappers didn’t want to be no R&B n*gga. Now the rappers is the new R&B n*ggas. Rap is the new radio. Like, where’s the culture rap?” (BBC 1)
Ye even took things a step further by declaring hip-hop the new form, popularity-wise, of rock n roll.
“Where is the culture rap? But then I scream and I’m sitting in the middle of it. Whether I’m at a dinner with Anna Wintour or I’m at a listening session with Pusha or me and [style advisor] Virgil are in Rome giving designs to Fendi over and over and getting our designs knocked down – we brought the leather jockey pants six years ago to Fendi and they said no. How many motherf*ckers you done seen with a leather jocking pant? … We culture. Rap the new rock n roll. We culture. Rap is the new rock n roll. We the rock stars. … We the realest rock stars and I’m the biggest of all of them.” (BBC 1)
Based on a 50-second teaser from last week, Mr. West will not hold back on letting out his personal thoughts throughout the series.
“It was good, that suit was like, I would have worn something different if I could look back right now. Exactly, but not for black music though. No flip flops for black dudes. Wear some hot a** Jordans on a beach. … You know, Dark Fantasy could be considered to be perfect. I say I know how to make perfect but that’s not what I’m here to do. People are going to look at this interview and say, ‘Hey, I understand what he’s talking about.’ People are going to look at this interview and say, ‘I don’t like Kanye. He looks mad, I don’t like his teeth.’ We the real rock stars and I’m the biggest of all of them. I’m the number one rock star on the planet.” (BBC 1 Radio)
Back in August, Kanye appeared on the “Kris Jenner Show” and unveiled his daughter’s face to the world.
Kanye West has been called many things, but these days the best description — according to him — is family man. The 36-year-old rapper appeared on Kris Jenner‘s daytime talk show “Kris” on Friday to discuss his relationship with Jenner’s daughter, Kim Kardashian, and their new addition, North. He did bring plenty of joy to Jenner’s show, as she beamed while displaying North’s photo for the audience. North, who was born June 15, has her mother’s eyes and father’s cheeks, according to Jenner. “The thing I think about as a dad is just protection. That’s my only goal, to Kanye said his goal is “to protect my daughter. That’s my instinct.” “To give my daughter as many opportunities to just be a child. Of course, a big thing that plagues us is this idea of the paparazzi chasing a 5-year-old around and screaming at them. … You have enough things to deal with and to learn being a new parent and you add that on top of it, and it becomes really intense.” (Fox 6 Now)
