Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West has reminded fans about his ability to not only drop 16 bars but to produce chart-topping records as of late.

Despite being known for rhymes, West explained how much dedication he has to production.

“You know what’s so bugged?” he said. “I had a friend that didn’t realize I produced the last Jay-Z album. Because I’m such a notorious pop character, such a hated guy, or a loved guy, controversial or whatever it is, that people kind of forget that I sit and work hard as hell on beats. I listened to CDs for three days to find the ‘Live Fast Die Young’ sample, which was ‘If This World Were Mine’ flipped by the Bar-Kays. And I loved the sample so much that I played it for two days. Just over and over and over, and I thought about it and said, ‘Claps. I want handclaps to go with this sample. That’s what I need to juxtapose it and not make it just some takeoff of a ’94 hip-hop song, but to make it a 2010, 2011, 2012 futuristic version of itself.’ And I started the claps and put the ‘hey, hey, hey’ and the drums, and I just programmed it. It’s kind of important for people to realize I’m a producer also.” (MTV)

Outside of hit-making, West is currently putting together a new album with Jay-Z.

Touching on his project with Big Brother Jay-Z, called Watch the Throne, West stated that the release will be a full album, not an EP, as was initially reported. “We had done five [songs] so far, and then a few of ’em, kind of, were out there, and I put them on my album. Sorry Jay,” he said, laughing. “But we got some more, and we going to the south of France at the end of this month just to record new ideas.” (XXL Mag)

Earlier this month, veteran producer Pete Rock confirmed his participation on the project.

“That came as a surprise to me because Jay-Z and I had never worked together,” Rock said in an interview. “I used to go to Jay-Z sessions to hang out, and once he asked me to help clear a Nas sample, but other than that … When the engineer called and said, ‘Pete, I got a surprise for you,’ and I heard Jay rapping over my beat, I was like, ‘Wow!’ — It was great to hear Jay over a Pete Rock beat. Wow. He says my name on the sh*t and everything.” (Billboard)

West initially revealed Rock would be involved on the album.

“We got new Pete Rock Joints on the Watch the Throne album…Q Tip joints… We bout to spit on this Madlib beat,” West tweeted September 25.

“We don’t play by radio rules… We come together as a family and give the fans what they need… Good Fridays” (Kanye West’s Twitter)
