The motivation behind releasing new albums from Kanye West, Kid Cudi, Big Sean and Consequence on September 14th has been revealed.
According to Consequence, the date was strategically planned with Universal Motown President Sylvia Rhone.
“Well…the idea for doing the G.O.O.D Music Day emerged between me and [Universal Motown Records President] Sylvia Rhone, just to be quite honest,” Cons revealed in an interview. “I’m very communicative with Sylvia Rhone on everything that I do. We had actually met with Kanye one night, and as me and her left the meeting, we left together and I was like, ‘Yo, we need to really get this paper right now.’ When we left we thought that this is where we need to take advantage of the situation. So…she got on the phone…made some boss calls, and then we got to it. At the time when [Big] Sean announced that [he was also dropping his album on September 14th] I didn’t know that he was in the mix of that, but it’s all good. But initially, how that sh*t came about was me, Kanye and Kid Cudi. I just hadn’t announced it because I know we had things that had to be ironed out. And it got ironed out where it’s – ‘Cause actually at the end of the day, Kanye being the head of G.O.O.D Music had to approve that. And the approval was based on, ‘Let’s shake the game up.’ Cudi got the kids, Cons got the streets, ‘Ye got the globe, so we all gon’ eat. [Laughs]” (Hip Hop DX)
Big Sean initially broke the news of their albums dropping on the same date last month.
“September 14, 2010 My album Finally Famous x Kanye West album Good A** Job x Kid Cudi album Man on the Moon pt 2 RT #GOODMUSIC,” he wrote over the weekend. (Big Sean’s Twitter)
This was later updated by Cons who announced his album, Cons TV, would also drop on September 14th.
“I guess Big Sean didn’t know but…he, Cudi & YES ME @itsthecons are ALL dropping September 14th!!! G.O.O.D. Music Has Arrived!!!,” he wrote via Twitter last month.
“Matter fact… At the end of the week I’m leaking a Snippet of “On My Own” featuring Kid Cudi which is off Cons TV!!! It’s Game Time!!!” (Consequence’s Twitter)
DJ Premier talked about the sound of Ye’s upcoming album in a recent interview.
“Well, first of all, if you look at all of Kanye West’s output, he actually did a lot to bring back sampling and make it cool again, even though he’s more of a mainstream artist” Premier explained. “But his new album is strictly hard beats and rhyme. He’s totally done with electro. You’re gonna be surprised what you hear.” (Amajanese)
