Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West has released footage from Hawaii showing his appreciation to consumers for going out to support his new highly priced Air Yeezy sneakers.
Recording from a speed boat, Ye expressed his gratitude to buyers and announced a forthcoming follow-up to his new kicks.
“We out here in Hawaii,” Ye said in the video. “So I just wanna do a little video blog for y’all right quick. It’s so beautiful wouldn’t you agree? You can see the clouds and the mountains. But I wanna thank everybody that went out and supported, copped the Yeezys. A lot of people had to pay overpriced, next time when we do the Yeezys 2, hopefully we can do some more but it was real good to get the buzz out there and I really appreciate everybody that went out there and supported it.” (Kanye Blog)
Fashion figures and fans alike have been analyzing the strength and quality of Ye’s debut Nike shoes including designer Virgil Ablon.
“Well the dark sole is crazy,” Ablon said in a video. “It’s like, give me a break. There’s so many elements. But it’s not overdone. Just the fact that [the bottom section] glows in the dark like this material, what is it, it’s like…The pop colors on the inside. But it’s not overdone, it won’t clash your outfit. The height in the front versus the back. The way the name is written…Pretty proper.” (Beyond The Hype)
Ye previously expressed his excitement about working with Nike.
“Nike is such an important brand to me,” West said in a statement. “Growing up, we looked forward to the release of new Nike’s the way we would an album by our favorite artist…I’ve been designing Nike’s in my sketch pad since the fourth grade. So to say I’ve been prepared for this would be an understatement. The really fun and challenging part for me was learning about Nike’s design process, learning more about fabrics and functions and colorways, and all of the details that go into designing a shoe of this quality.” (Woooha)
The sneaker collection had been in the works since last year.
Air Yeezy was developed from a strong relationship between West and Nike. Partnering with Nike Creative Director, Mark Smith, Kanye was taken through the product creation process, the same way athletes have with Nike Design for the past 37 years. This creative partnership of Smith and West’s talents as designers yielded a unique Nike Sportswear sneaker. “Kanye could wear and perform in these shoes and really identify how we could make the shoes perform better,” Smith said in a statement. The Air Yeezy’s were reportedly released earlier this week for a retail price of $215.
