Grammy-winning rapper Kanye West has opened up about a new film he is working on called Runaway and how the project reflects on his career.
According to West, the film will be roughly 40 minutes and based on his upcoming untitled LP.
“I’m color-correcting this film I shot in Prague a couple weeks ago. I want to edit the film on a boat. Where are the good editing boats?” — is called Runaway, and is a 40-minute noir piece based on his new album. “It’s the story of a phoenix fallen to Earth, and I make her my girlfriend, and people discriminate against her and eventually she has to burn herself alive and go back to her world,” he told us. “I’ve been feeling the idea of the phoenix. It’s been in my heart for a while. It’s maybe parallel to my career. I threw a Molotov cocktail on my career last year, in a way, and I had to come back as a better person.” Is it weird that we wanted to hug him? Like, somebody, please find this man his missing fish tank, you know?” (New York Magazine)
West also performed his new song, “Runaway,” at last weekend’s Video Music Awards.
Kanye West’s “Runaway” held 11 million pairs of eyes in rapt attention when he debuted it at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. But how compelling is the song itself without all the televised spectacle, when it’s just another MP3 on your iPod on a random weekday? Now that NYC radio DJ Funkmaster Flex has debuted West’s studio version of “Runaway” online, we have an answer. And I like “Runaway” even better this way than I did at the VMAs. His record is currently creating a buzz across the Internet as well.
In the song, West seems to cut back on the egomaniac persona featured in his previous singles and opts for a self-deprecating approach. “I always find something wrong / You’ve been putting up with my s– just way too long / I’m so gifted at finding what I don’t like the most,” West sings in “Runaway.” “Let’s have a toast for the douche bags / Let’s have a toast for the a******s / Let’s have a toast for the scum bags / Everyone of them that I know,” he adds in the chorus. A trailer to the actual film has also been released.
The opening shot of the clip shows a long look down a paved road in a wooded area; then there’s a quick shot of several deer in the woods. The next image is that of a dancer dressed all in black followed by a feathered woman. West holds the feathered woman, carrying her to safety as a fiery explosion happens in the background. Later in the clip, a title card flashes that reads “Runaway,” which we can only assume is the title of the Chicago MC’s upcoming flick. (MTV)
