Grammy-winning singer John Legend and supermodel wife Chrissy Teigen heat up the latest issue of GQ Magazine with a must-see-and-read spread.
Within their joint feature, Legend and Teigen talk about showing support for recent Eric Garner verdict protestors.
When protesters of the Eric Garner verdict flooded the city’s streets in December, Teigen and Legend dispatched a fleet of food trucks to feed them Sunday supper. Not some slopped-out gray gruel, either. Like good New Yorkers, they sent some real kimchi-fried foodie food out—the sort of sustenance that befits a food-porn-tweeting cookbook author (Teigen’s first volume is due out within the year) and her taster-in-chief. Music veteran Common and Legend won their Golden Globe trophy in the Best Original Song category for the Oscar-nominated Selma movie earlier this month.
The pair won for ‘Glory,’ the uplifting track from the inspirational, Civil Rights-centric movie. And as motivational as their song is, the duo’s acceptance speech was equally as emotional, as Common and Legend compared the leaders of the Civil Rights movement of the ’60s to those who are still fighting for equality in our country today — particularly in regards to the recent protests in light of Ferguson and the murder of Eric Garner. Common gave an emotional acceptance speech alongside Legend during the televised ceremony.
“The first day I stepped on the set of ‘Selma,’ I began to feel like this was bigger than a movie,” he said. “As I got to know the people of the Civil Rights movement, I realized I am the hopeful black woman who was denied her right to vote. I am the caring white supporter, killed on the front lines of freedom. I am the unarmed kid who maybe needed a hand, but instead was given a bullet. I am the two fallen police officers murdered in the line of duty. ‘Selma’ has awakened my humanity.” (“Golden Globe Awards”)
Legend gave props to movie director Ava DuVernay for recruiting him.
“He called me up and he said, ‘John, I want you to help me write a song for this film, and I’m so honored I was brought on at the last minute to be apart of this amazing film.'” (“Golden Globe Awards”)
